T8247741
Can anyone recommend a good brand of hairspray in the UK to attempt the hairspray method ??
tank152
Why bother with hairspray when you can buy something designed for the job like AK Worn Effects. However if you really want to use hairspray get some that is low hold. Tim.
Killingholme
I've only tried it once, but Tesco value range at about 50p did the trick for me! Will
Av8fan
Everyone seems to use whatever they can acquire easily & reasonably. I did find out that there are scented hairsprays Who knew? So avoid those. As with any new technique, drag out a test hulk and practice on that. I am lucky that I have a few (too many) test hulks that I can practice on

robw_uk
i used what my wife had in - Silverkrin... but I think it is more the paint you spray OVER the HS that makes a difference.. read in the PanzerArt book (Mike Rinaldi) that Tamiya is good - good adhesion but with a little water breaks down - I used Vallejo for the whitewashed STUG I did, while it came off OK it was a little "clumpy".... may do whitewash on my Pz III thats on the table now and may try Tamiya paint for that.....
colin
Tamiya paints are good, but don't thin with cellulose thinner if you want to chip/wear it, use their X20A thinner.

Tim, your reply makes sense matey and the AK Worn Effects could be the right stuff but giving a cheapo hairspray a go wouldn't hurt..would it?I've never tried this technique (not with HS at least...since in the past I've used mold releasing agent and even diluted WD40 and both worked after a little practice), but a few days ago I bought a can of HS priced for less than a quid and you'd have seen my GF's face when she saw me coming waving the can in the middle of the department store asking her if it was enough of a stinker....a lecture on hairsprays followed and add to that that I shave my head, but I digress! Anyway, seems like the cheaper the better but it should always be decanted and used thru the airbrush rather than sprayed straight from the can. I think that this technique can be mastered rather easily with a little practice and IIRC Mike Rinaldi brilliantly explains how to do that in his books. Andy Moore
Hi mate Hope the salt chipping goes well but if you're still interested in trying hairspray, I currently use a Morrisons own brand one. I've used natural and firm hold and they both work well. Really, any cheap stuff will work. I've also used AK chipping fluid which works fine too but is obviously a lot more expensive and I've found it has a tendency to bead on the surface whereas hairspray gives a more even coat. For paint most people recommend Tamiya although I get good results with Vallejo too. Artists watercolour works very well too, especially for winter white wash finishes. In all cases I thin with water and mist the paint on as it can activate the hairspray in you spray it too wet. I also prefere to clear coat the base layer before adding the hairspray but it's by no means essential. I did these test pieces last year This is Vallejo white over hairspray All the best Andy
