SimonL
The newish Airfix kit completed as Wing Commander Guy Gibson’s G-George. Kind friends of mine gifted me this for my birthday just before Christmas, so I decided it would be this year's 'Christmas build". First time I have completed the annual Christmas build within the holiday period. I have had an interest in the Dams Raid ever since reading Paul Brickhill's book during a wet week in Betws-y-Coed as a young lad. Later on when my father was posted to Soest in Germany we lived in a flat in Korbecke, just a short walk from the Korbecke Bridge across one arm of the Mohnesee. I believe this was where Gibson turned to head up the lake towards the Mohne Dam. I have previously made the old Airfix version - but it did not survive a fall from a great height 10 years ago. For some reason I still had the remnants in my garage: Any way onto the completed model. Brush painted with Tamiya acrylics. WIP thread here. I really enjoyed this, although I did find it a bit fiddly at the end fixing the last pieces. First time I have had a go at serious exhaust stains, which not having an airbrush I did by some sequential dry brushing of tame acrylics (Nato black, buff and medium grey). I also tried Clearfix for the side windows in the extreme nose, which I think I need some practice with (got an air bubble on one side). Thanks for looking.

rob85
Really great looking AC. Wish mine had turned out like that. I have had a gifting experience which is the opposite of yours. I have the new kit and it's in fine condition and a friend from work has gifted me the old kit which does not look to different to the first pic you put up just it's been done by a 9 year old and it's not been painted.... I liked your gift more! Congrats on a great model and WIP Rob

bbudde
Very nice looking Lancaster. Oh I,m also very fond of that special version for the same reasons as you. My birthplace is 20km away from lake Möhne. A village called Anröchte. I was so often at this lake, I couldn't count . As a growing kid with my friends sometimes by bike over the Haar, by car with my family or for a short weekend trip with my school class to Delecke and so on. I always get fascinated by the massive Dam (lakeside and landside), or to look downward right from the middle of the huge dam. Another special moment is, when they drain the dammed up water. What a power. In german there is book by Helmuth Euler about the dam raids, which I bought there and I read it more than twice. All in all for me it was and is an atractive region to grow up and live. Always reminds me of a song by New Model Army called "The valleys of green and grey" . Cheers from Germany. bbudde
Just saw that tonight here on the (local) german television. I don't know, how long this will be postet there, but interesting at all: http://www1.wdr.de/fernsehen/dokumentation_reportage/geheimnisvolleorte/sendungen/geheimnismoehnetalsperre104.html Edited February 20, 2015 by bbudde
