Ukrainian Su-27 Flanker - Update 1/3

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Here is my entry for this GB; Academy's 1/48 Su-27 Flanker B in the markings of the Ukrainian Air Force.

The kit:

The aftermarket:

Will be using a Pavla cockpit, Quickboost resin nose, Master brass pitot tube, Begemot decals and a J's Work paint mask.

The scheme, though not the exact aircraft:

Once my F-14 is cleared off the bench, I'll make a start.

Look forward to this Dave, make sure you put up your thoughts on the paint masks as I've been tempted by some of those before.

Got one of these stashed with Eduard wheels, Aires Pit, the QB nose and I'm tempted by the Dream Model PE. such a good looking aircraft!

watch this with interest - remember the fun with the 3 colour F5E Aggressor scheme - do those masks work Dave?

I dont blame you for needing a masking set! If I had to try and mask and paint that freehand you would have to all come visit me in the nearest mental health establishment to see if I had completed it.

Its a very interesting and striking scheme shall look awesome once complete.

Made a start this morning. First up was the Pavla cockpit set. The detail isn't bad, but not the best. I think for any subsequent Su-27's that I build, i'll stick with either Neomega or Wolfpack Designs for the cockpit. I also made a bit of a boob boob and sawed away half the floor  and so i attached a square piece of styrene sheet to cover it up. Won't be seen under the seat anyway:

While that was drying, i assembled the missiles. Saw a few pictures of heavily armed Ukrainian Flankers in magazines from the recent unrest in eastern Ukraine, so i'll arm this one to resemble a load for a Combat Air Patrol:

6x R-27's (AA-10 'Alamo') with a variety of warheads and 4x R-73 (AA-11 'Acher').

Exhausts. Was going to get a set of Aires resin ones, but the kit parts are detailed enough for me:

The trickiest part thus far has been the intakes, the fit isn't great:

Once everything had dried, i closed up the fuselage. (yes, all that tape is necessary!)

Cockpit nice and snug:

More soon.

The detail on that 'pit does look a bit soft and indistinct but you've made good progress with this one.

Yeah, it's not the best but still better than the kit offering, but no where near as detailed as the Wolfpack one. Regretting not getting one of those now.

I love that splinter scheme, Dave.

Good luck, the camo session will be most interesting.

Cheers mate, hope I can pull it off!

Bit of a delay in continuing with this, new job has ate into my modelling time, only getting a few hours a week now. Anyway, added the resin nosecone and the last part of the Pavla cockpit.

Then moved on to add the slats which are a nightmare to get a good snug fit! You can see the sheer amount of clamps needed from the photos.

Intakes aren't much better:

Paints arrived, though I think the dark blue is too dark, so will probably use the light blue as the darker of the blues on the jet if that makes sense!

IMG_7076_zps4ru2z12n.jpg

Will leave all that to cure overnight and get a couple of hours at it tomorrow to clean up the slats, add the flaps and clean up some of the filler. Once that is done it's nearly ready for paint as all the sub assemblies (tail fins etc) are ready to go!

More soon.

I remember the slats being a bugger on my failed -27. Tempted to add them to the upper and lower fuselage when I build mine and then mate them that way. If I remember rightly, the flaps aren't the best fitting either.
