goon
Hi everyone, I am scratch building a 1/48 KC-135 refuelling boom. I have made the boom and applied four pieces of plastic card to define the "bulb" that mounts the wings. It kind of looks like a dart at the moment. What would people recommend for filling in and sculpting the smooth shape of the bulb? I think I'm looking for something that is not too sticky but can be smoothed and shaped easily. Something like milliput feels like it might be too "stiff". Any recommendations? Thanks, Gareth
Black Knight
you can thin milliput by adding water to it.
goon
I didn't know that, I'll see how it works out. Thanks.
pte1643
Fimo or Sculpey are readily available and easy to use. Very soft and malleable, but do need to be cured in the oven.
goon
The boom has a plastic core, so probably not a good combination. Thanks for the tip, though, I might nip along to Hobbycraft to have a look if they've got any air curing stuff.
Dads203
Green stuff epoxy putty is great to work with, it's like milliput but smoother and easier to work with. I've used it for a few years now for figure conversion work. Dan
Raven Morpheus
Green stuff epoxy putty is great to work with, it's like milliput but smoother and easier to work with. I've used it for a few years now for figure conversion work. Dan 2nd this. Games Workshop modellers use it extensively, people sculpt whole figures out of it. It's also called kneadatite if you want the non-GW branded stuff. It comes in a strip of 2 colours, blue and yellow, and you cut a bit off and roll it all together until it's nice and green and apply to the model, no need for water, no need for baking in an oven. It's such a great and easy to use product that I really can't understand why it's not widely used by the model community outside of the GW hobby!? JeffreyK
I use Magic Sculp, also sold by Sylmasta. It's another 2-part epoxy material, very fine grain and nice to work with, can be smoothed or thinned with water. I haven't tried Green Stuff, but from what I've read Green Stuff is slightly flexible when cured, whereas Magic Sculpt cures rock hard, like Milliput.
