Hasbro Millennium Falcon

Recommended Posts

Having heard the Argos had these at half price I treated myself to a pre-Christmas pressie.

The contents are quite sparse!

I have to say that I am quite impressed with both the amount of detail on the 'toy' and the proportions of it, at just over 700mm long it works out at about 1:45 scale. The only down side is some of the side walls are stickers, as are all the windows and engine detail.

As a comparison here it is with FMs 1:144 kit.

First area to tackle was the cockpit, removed the front and the internal bulkhead, cut out the windows and started to scratch build the cockpit.

There are 3D printed replacement cockpit parts available online but at about £60 I'll keep scratchbuilding!

Test fitted into body halves.

Will be a slow burn on this in between soldering LEDs, though will be looking to light this up and maybe have the lighting remote controlled.

Thanks for looking.

Good start. Will keep an eye on your thread, as I have one of these and plan to go all out on it, too.

Those 3-d printed pieces are going to become the masters for a resin detail set, to be produced by Mike Salzo, so definitely worth waiting for those.

Btw, don't know if you're aware, but the standard traditional glues won't work on this big beastie, as it's polypropylene. Check out the thread on the RPF for some suggestions for what to use instead.

cool project Warren. This'll be fun to watch.

Can you clarify if this is an unpainted toy or is it a really basic model? I've never seen one of these before. If it's a toy, why didn't they paint it?

At least there's heaps of scope for detailing and lighting :)

Hi Si,

Hope you had a good Christmas with all the plastic you wished for!

The Hasbro Falcon is a toy, moulded in soft grey plastic, the box says its for 4+ years so ideal for me!!

To keep the cost down all the coloured panels are stickers as are the windows, engine and some of the side panels. The surface detail is very good, I'm not going toadd anything further to it. The only nasty part to it is the landing gear but I want to display it in flight so will be removing the offending lumps of plastic and scratching some covers.

Cheers,

Warren

Yes and they've captured it's shape, outline and proportions way better than any plastic kit of the Falcon, ever produced. All it needs is some detailing, some lighting, a little fettling and a paint job. It's like it's been made with us modellers in mind.

I bought one and was so impressed, I sold my 72nd Finemolds kit. B)

Hi Dave,

Underside of Falcon

And a close up

The landing gear is not that good and the underside gun is moulded on but not too bothered as it is on the underside and will not be seen that easily when finished.

The stickers

Side panels and airlocks

Now off to talk the dog for a walk in the snow!

A good start :) It looks a lot like the MPC kit in places, just much bigger and as if they've vac-formed some of the parts, then created the moulds. The landing gear is horrible, isn't it? :puke:

I got one too. It's made from PE, so paint won't stick to it unless you apply adhesion promoter before the primer.

Ideally PE should be flamed and wiped down with alcohol first, but I'm a bit worried about melting the details.

well, it is a toy after all :) But you and everyone else are quite right - they are bad! I wasn't sure what they were until someone pointed them out as being the landing gear. Shocking job.

Still, overall, it's a detailers wet dream come true really. The bottom guns could be cut off very carefully with a scriber and the barrles replaced with brass. If the enitre body comes apart, you could almost attach them to servos and have them turn etc. It's not like there wouldnt be enough room inside :D

MH, it would be fairly easy to cast a copy of to top gun as this is loose and replace the barrels on both. Landing gear is available on a certain auction site to replace the lumps of plastic but I'm going to build mine in flight so will just scratch covers for them.

The servo idea had me on that auction site and for less than £3 I can get a couple of motors!

Warren

I did a search but i'm confused as a lot of Hasbro Falcon's seem to have the word 'Legacy' in the title and feature internals, figures etc.... Are these 'play' Falcon's the same scale/size ?

I don't have any of the legacy parts but reading on various forums it would appear that this Falcon is a similar size, can't say definately but looks about the same.

Currently drilling out the holes in the underside for all the landing and warning lights.

Right, a quick question, anyone had any experience with electroluminescent tape, might be worth looking at for the engine lighting.

I got this too and I also bought issue one of the DeAgostini model for the cockpit detail. It will need cutting down to fit but once it's in the cockpit I don't think anyone is going to say it's wrongly proportioned. I also note that some other modelling fora (yes folks, we are NOT the only one) some people say that the laser cannons are not quite the right size on some models so I'm wondering if the metal ones for the DeAg kit would be ok on this one but I think they may be too big.

Included with the DeAg model is one section of hull plating and although it won't fit properly, it does give a good indication of colour and weather effects.

For the engine, I've got some 12v LED strip and I think there's enough room to run two strips next to each other and put them behind a blue tinted strip of plastic.

Finally, my kids (who get me very excellent presents) bought me a Revell snap together kit a couple of years back which rather splendidly comes with a pre coloured blue strip. 12v LED strip later and voila !

  • 4 weeks later...

I've just ordered a set of resin parts and photoetch from Randy Cooper for this. So will get back on to this when it arrives, which should hopefully be towards the end of the month. Will probably do more on the lighting before then.

Cheers,

Warren
