I wonder why they haven't gone with a less risky parachute recovery system. I know NASA trialed recovery of 1st stages of Saturn IBs in the 1960s but never took the idea further than half scale drops from aircraft.

The video of the tests show a good degree of control but this will be much more challenging as, I assume, the descending rocket has to come down reasonably near the landing barge in the first place. Do we know how high the rocket will go in this test or is it only to a low level like the tests over land have been? Regardless, I can only admire and applaud Elon Musk and his team. They seem to me to be the boldest and most innovative people around who are trying to develop commercial spaceflight and create advances in the technology.

The test is piggybacking on the CRS5 mission so it's under full flight conditions not a low level test. They've nailed the procedures and done the math to get a turn around and bring the stage back to a designated landing spot. Although landing it on a barge with swell etc is a bit of a challenge.

I can't wait to see it though.
