larchiefeng
I bought two different colors of high build primer from Pep Boys. They had the grey and a red high build primer. I think it's Duplicolor. I'll look at the cans later and if it's different I'll let you know. hendie
Thanks - I'll pick some of that up the next time I'm passing an autozone or similar. Just a small update today - Still working in the bathroom area - this is the only photo I have of the cistern that we saved and reinstated during the rebuild and here is my interpretation of the part. Made up from a turned piece of aluminum, brass rod, tube, and resin nuts and bolts. Now that I compare it to the photo above, it looks a bit agricultural. Oh well, we'll see how it looks in situ when it's all chromed up. The original pipes disappeared up through the ceiling. I've decided to have them turn into the wall as I'm not absolutely sure if I'll be having a ceiling in the bathroom or vestibule ends. A little bit of artistic license is allowed every now and then. The part has now been primed and sprayed gloss black in preparation for some Alclad chrome.

It's like the railroad version of what color is sky ? I did ask the question over on rmweb where I thought someone would pipe up with "oh, you need xxxxx brown from yyy supplier" but I think there were only two replies pointing me to the suppliers I mentioned above. If only the Luftwaffe had flown in Pullman brown and cream, I'd be spoilt for choice with paint suppliers. Amazing build watching with great interest though will admit to missing the last few days. I've posted a link to this build over on Railnuts facebook page with a request for the colour matches. I know a man over there that will know the answer if I can persuade him to reveal the match. p.s. just to be anal it's umber and cream not brown. keep up the good work

I never realized that matching those colors would be so difficult, the situation being made even more ludicrous by the UK postal service's refusal to handle small pots of paint. (I did find a few matches - phoenix precision paints, and railmatch do Pullman Cream and Umber - but neither will post overseas)

Mixed specifically for them by automotive paint specialists I should be able to squeeze the mix out of them this weekend. If all else fails should be able to get swatches from their reserve stock.
larchiefeng
That cistern is pretty impressive as is the whole bathroom with all the little bits of plumbing and fixtures! Have you figured out a way to not close in the bathroom on the final assembly; it would be a shame to not be able to see all the detail that, you are packing into the interior? Removable roof so everything can be viewed?
injidup
It's taken me a while but I've just worked out what SAHB is. I think. Sensational Alex Harvey Band. No idea what the reference is... one of their songs? I also remember there was SAHB Without Alex. Great modelling skills, wish I had half the talent! Kev. perdu
Is that a ta... faucet under the cistern H? Some kind of operating lever? Any road up mate, not agricultural, rather something blooming sublime I love the way you DO stuff, its brilliant SAHB? I always meant to try working it out but always always get blown away by the minutiae of Hendie masterclass Alex Harvey? Yup that'll work for me

Removable roof so everything can be viewed? There's only the bathroom, kitchen, and end vestibules which have flat ceilings in the carriage. I think I will leave those off, or perhaps use clear plastic as the ceiling. Early thoughts were that I may have a removable roof though I'm still undecided as whether to go down that path or have some transparent roof section. I really haven't thought that far ahead, though I think I should put some thought towards it before it's too late. 14 hours ago, injidup said: Sensational Alex Harvey Band. SAHB did a great cover version of "Framed" (in a very strong Glaswegian accent) way back in the day. Another one of those great under-rated bands. I got to see them at Parkhead, which I think was one of the first ever stadium gigs in the UK. They were supporting the Who. I was a big Who fan back then (pre-1976!), and SAHB absolutely blew the Who off the stage. I've never seen anyone control a crowd like Alex Harvey did that day. 8 hours ago, longshanks said: I design & fit kitchens / bathrooms for a living...................... Pete in Lincs
Well, I'm impressed with your plumbing. Domestos? maybe a scale bottle in the corner? Ha ha ha And the SAHB were very good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzzOBv7RPbw
hendie
13 hours ago, perdu said: Is that a ta... faucet under the cistern H? Some kind of operating lever? Upon closer inspection it appears that it is a vintage "push to flush" type button. I searched and searched, but I didn't have any of those lying around, but... just for you Bill..... I used a Meng nut and bolt - this was my third attempt at filing a groove in the back face so that it sat nicely over the pipework. That was given a quick lashing of gloss black, and then just before I vacated the den tonight I threw some Alclad chrome on to see what it looked like. .. and it looked like this.... Now, whether it stays like that is another matter. I always have trouble with alclad chrome rubbing off as soon as I breathe anywhere near it. I'll try giving it a quick coat of clear gloss later in the week and then see what happens. In the meantime, I'm working on the towel rail and the toilet roll holder. Exciting stuff ! Oh ! and I've figured out how to make seats without all the air bubbles in them (at least I think I have....still need to prime them to make sure though)

larchiefeng
This is kind of starting to look a bit like the Wessex when, every time someone points out a missing piece or an error you cobble together the exact right thing! lol

Its not just you, but if you like them why not do what I do? I always order them in pairs of boxes, my last break was two evenings ago though because they are very brittle steel As I said, we all do that but pay the price because they do the job very nicely (Another -lift off roof- advocate here)

What clutz... I always try and figure out how many I'm going to need to do me through the next couple of months, double it, ... then buy twice that amount! Sometimes I break 'em on the first use, sometimes I can get them to last quite a while. With the thinner ones, if you stray from the perpendicular while drilling, they're a gonner. Still, they're the best drills out there by far. 4 hours ago, Nigel Heath said: I think a removable roof is a good idea. I think transparent areas would look a bit naff. I tend to agree Nigel. The problem will be that it will be in a display case, so removing the roof for a quick look-see won't be an easy task.... unless I hinge it.... and use a couple of bimba cylinders with a remote control to actuate the open and close..... Not going to happen! 5 hours ago, heloman1 said: Ooooooh, Hendie that little part looks tit *cough* (is that a South African expression ?)
longshanks
I was going to suggest a cut away(s) on one side to reveal the interior. Having gone back to look at the lay out I've changed my mind. With the amount and size of windows, I reckon with some small led lights concealed (as light fittings ) all will be revealed. Kev
