snapper_city
Hi guys, after a bit of help. I'm looking into different Metal Acrylic colour ranges. Without going into Alclads or Enamels I am interested to hear others experiences and preferences with different Acrylic brands. These are only to be airbrushed. Vallejo, Tamiya, Gunze, Lifecolour etc... Thanks in advance..
DAG058
I've just sprayed my first but of Vallejo silver this very afternoon. It seemed slightly thicker than the normal paint so might be an idea to thin it a bit more. When spraying I found that there didn't seem to be very much on the model then all of a sudden there seemed to be way too much. It may just be the metallic effect playing tricks on me though! I will let you know the results when it's dry and I unmask the model. So far I'm happy.
Paul J
Not sure what brand, but beleive it to be vallejo Air Colours or something and the aluminium one I have seems to take for evr to dry and rubs off on your fingers, An airbrushed coat of Klear to seal it made it go al l'mushy' So not particularly enamoured with it. The Revall Acqua color might be Ok.It dreis smooth brush painted but not sure about buffing it.

gcn
If you are going to use Gunze you may as well use Alclad, they pong the same. Vallejo MA acrylics are excellent for hand brushing. I've just sprayed some of their Gunmetal and Alu for the first time and I was relatively happy with the results. I thinned them slightly and sprayed at about 15 psi on top of a primed surface. Gunze are good and can be polished up to alter the effect. I just tip the paint unthinned into the AB. It's worth upping the pressure a touch as the spray can be intermittent. Have a look at Citadel metallics, their silver thinned with Tamiya thinners (white cap) spray really well and leave an excellent finish. The only tamiya metallic I've used is their xf-16, huge great pigment and a poor end product IMO

Skyhunter66
I've been trying out some of the Halfords colours - some I've sprayed from the can and others I've decanted and airbrushed. I've only tried them on old kits so far but others on this site seem to have had great success with them Chris
jenko
thats sounds interesting - what colours have you tried so far Dick?? Chris Silver, old silver, iron . Brush easily but need a little thining with TAP water. Talking to the owner the paints are industrial acrylics that he puts into a more useable size bottle. Think SWMBO would have a dickyfit if I started buying by the gallon. Dick

Dick Ah yes I think perhaps I would have the same problem! Anyway I like the sound of this - half the price of Alclad so will give these a whirl. Thanks for sharing Thanks guys. Iv sprayed citadel silver before and liked the results. Now I've got a bottle of Citadel - does it need thinning to airbrush??
CharlieNZ
It needs to be thinned a lot. It's pretty thick out of the bottle.
snapper_city
I always thin citadel with Ultimate Modelling Products thinner. Has given me the best results over Tamiya X20, IPA or water.

Giorgio N
Citadel's Mythril Silver used to be my favourite acrylic metalllic. I say "used to" because this colour is discontinued and the replacement is slightly darker. I preferred the original tint for my natural metal aircrafts. In any case, Citadel's metallics are very good with a very fine pigment. I recently tried some Vallejo model colour metallics and I was not impressed. The pigments are not fine enough IMHO. I've been told the model air ones are better with much finer pigments, I have to try a few. One acrylic I'm finding quite good comes from a German company named Marabu. These are generic decoration paints but their matt silver is very nice with quite fine pigments and a good colour. I've yet to try airbrushing though, will do a test soon and report
snapper_city
I have ordered a few model air to try. I'll report back the results.

Knikki
I have just done, not quite finished, MiG15 using Vallejo Model Air, mix of Aluminium and Silver, plus adding some dark grey on the fly to add a bit of contrast. They have sprayed very well, the coats can be put on very thin so you do have to be a little careful when handling it. I am no expert (only done two now) but i really like the Model Air, I tend to find with other colours in there range that they are a little on the dark side, so you may want to think about an undercoat of very light grey or maybe white to make the silver stand out a bit more.
DAG058
Well the Vallejo turned out nicely! I didn't have the problems that others may have had. The only thing I noticed is the pigment really gets every where so ensure you mask up really well.
DaveO
I've had very good results using the Vallejo (white top) metal colours thinned with winter windscreen wash. Spray at low pressure in thin coats
