bobmig
OK...time for speculating. The yellow ring around the US insignia was usually applied to aircraft destined for the North African theatre. Possibly late 1942 - early 1943? The colour scheme may well be the original Haze scheme (as opposed to the later Synthetic Haze). The Haze finish used a black base coat with a graduated misting on of a special colloidal zinc oxide pigment. This light spray of white wore off quickly and/or was often poorly applied or applied very lightly and not brought up the fuselage sides as it should have been. It also can reproduce very strangely in photographs. Hard to tell from the original photo, but just my opinion. Here's a pic of another aircraft in Haze paint, though in this case the white is applied quite heavily though not graduated very well.
Dana Bell
Bob's right on this one - the aircraft was painted in Haze Paint. As the aircraft weathered, the pale, translucent top coat eroded, leaving the black undercoat. (It doesn't help that the contrast on that image is shot to heck.) It's not an easy scheme to reproduce in scale, though I've seen many successful representations. Cheers, Dana
brewerjerry
Hi Many thanks to you both for the replies. So the black under coat, was presumably a matt finish ? Cheers Jerry P.s. Just found a link on the paint sceme and a profile of an almost black F-4A-1-LO http://34th.photorecon.org/html/aircraft/haze.html Edited November 29, 2014 by brewerjerry
