In the groove

Pull up a chair & swing the lantern ...... warning brass was hurt in the making of this lesson :wicked:

Today it's emergency steering. I'm using Aber SV-07 Etched hand wheels, centres removed. I also want to show the benefits of using solder paint.

Setting out

P1040814%20Copy_zpss3reufv1.jpg

Paint applied before top disc placed
P1040816%20Copy_zpstcbqor3u.jpg

Application of a micro torch (just a touch)

P1040817%20Copy_zpsvjfgcqro.jpg

Looks a mess

Cleaned with Acetone and a stiff brush
P1040821%20Copy_zpsnrhlpysi.jpg

Clean with fibreglass pen
P1040823%20Copy_zpstfvlskrg.jpg

As you can see no mess, no fuss and no great gobs of solder. All I did was clean the brass, no flux and they all stuck first time. Belive me I'm no expert at soldering. To give a sense of scale the wheel is 9.5mm diameter overall.

With pedestal, undercoat....

and the emergency tiller

Yes Brass work now we are talking, you have come over to the dark side, very nice job Kev but I have never heard of solder paint, do you have a picture of the jar.

link for that solder paint

I thought I might hook you

http://www.cupalloys.co.uk/soft-solders/index.asp

Comes in Humbrol size tin, no flux required. Postage is expensive overseas, I guess this is because of the lead content.

Richard, a mere apprentice compared with the big boys on here. See above

Thanks guys for the support

Very Nice! I've got some of their solder in a syringe and also some extra in a plastic tub. They're brilliant for small assemblies. Thinking of which, I really ought to resurrect Fair Rosamund now that it's getting warmer...ish.

yup, I'm hooked.  Though I've tried to find that (or similar) stuff here in the large expanse of civilization that is the US of A - and I can't find it.  The closest thing I can find is solder paste.  I'm not sure if that is the same thing or not, but it always seems to be sold in syringes at exorbitant prices.

Hold the front page ! .... I may have found some.  Does this look like the stuff you are using ?  Chip Quick Solder Paste

I've been playing with my Denton life floats..............

You can see my ref pics above, nothing definitive so I've come up with the following

P1040840%20Copy_zpso665fnum.jpg

P1040841%20Copy_zpsv3caoljw.jpg

P1040842%20Copy_zpss76bidmo.jpg

All the white will be grey, just got carried away

The question is which idea do you think best represents the floats. There is no right answer but I would welcome your thoughts or choice

As a point of interest the left hand one uses eyelets which I made (original process from Seadog)

Thought you might like to see how

In this example I'm using 0.17mm wire (taken from House flex) over 0.3mm rod

I think the pics are self explanatory. The only thing I would say is pull the pin vice as your turning

P1040835%20Copy_zpsgjlue0w8.jpg

P1040836%20Copy_zpsmtabhv1m.jpg

Thanks for looking in

In a word NO!

I have paste and I don't find it as easy to use. Plus the spec on yours shows no lead content .

What was wrong with  http://www.cupalloys.co.uk/soft-solders/index.asp

10th item down on page

Ah - good info.

Nothing wrong with the 10th item down.  It was the fact it was in the UK, and like you mentioned - postage alone is nearly 20 GBP - over twice what the product costs.  Seems a bit crazy.

I have family coming over later in the year so it looks like there's a few things that I'll be stocking up on when they come over

Love the dental  Denton floats Kev, looking good. Just treated myself to a budget soldering station, I'll drop you a PM for some advice on painty, pastey, fluxy free, er,................................., soldering stuff (this being akin to alchemy to me). :blink::hmmm::undecided:

There have been over 200 views of these pics/ question with no response, This can only lead me to believe that all of them are crap or I’m wasting my time posting

Oh well! Plenty of other things to do

Never think of no responses as being negative. I've picked up loads from this topic alone. Not likely to build any large scale (for me) MGBs but it has led me to read up on the subject which from me gets you a great big

Cheers

The one on the left is the most polished example although the grab-lines on the middle float are the most convincing

OK, resisting the almost overwhelming temptation to say they are all pants, I shall be a sensible Martian for once and say that although the workmanship is fine on all of them, I think the one on the left looks the most seaman like but the one on the right has more visual impact. Doesn't help much does it?

Martian (being as much use as a chocolate bar on the surface of Mercury)

PS: I would suggest that the lack of replies may well have more to do with people having three equally well made items set in front of them and being unable to chose between them rather than a lack of interest.  I struggled and you can't express an opinion on something until you have made your mind up.

PPS: Sorry if me being a sensible alien has thrown you or anyone else following this thread into confusion. :frantic:

That's good but no response to a question is fairly negative....

What do we know about trains but we can comment on if a piece feels right

Thank you all for the response, I was going around in circles. At this moment I thinking perhaps a tweak/amalgamation/stir of the cauldron based on your comments
