Darby
Anybody know if these 1/76 kits have ever been re-boxed over the years? Just to bring back memories of rainy weekends and getting glue over everything
triumphfan
Darby, I am pretty sure that Revell have re-boxed some of the old Matchbox offerings. I too have fond memories of building these. They had a ready made diorama in the box too which made them irresistible. Steve.
cmatthewbacon
If you do a search on eBay for "1/76 Revell", you'll find hundreds of them -- I think ANYTHING in 1/76 sold by Revell is Matchbox in origin. You can also find loads of the originals at pretty accessible prices. Favorites of the CBK SIG include the "Monty's Caravan" set and the two French tanks in one box... bestest, M. davidelvy
I also have fond memories of these. I got rid of most of my childhood modelsmwhen I left home, but think I kept the Comet. The bases were an excellent idea which added a lot of interest to the finished model without a lot of effort.
Graham Boak
Before Revell tipped their toes into reruns - and apparently were surprised at the high response - some of these kits were available from Chinese production. I'm told this led to some plastic colours even more lurid than the Matchbox originals, though the few I had were pretty normal.

Hepster
It might be worth pointing out that the decal quality of the Revell re-boxes is a lot higher than the Matchbox originals. But I qualify that observation with the fact that Matchbox branded kits produced from the early 1990s to 2000 were of Revell manufacture and also had better decals than the earlier kits made from 1973 onwards. Alan 47
Yeah revell are the ones for the re boxes they've just released the Blackburn Buccaneer and the victor bomber they are issuing them as 1/72 scale though and you don't get the two colour kit now like the old matchbox ones
Darby
Some temptation has been sent my way methinks. Hopefully if I gat hold of some I can make a better job on the rubber tracks. And those dio bases were great. The Wespe with the cows skull was my fave Cheers all

badger
Oliver in the for sale section has some matchbox originals and revell re-issues for £5 each. His thread is called 'more from the vault of doom'. Have bought lots of kits from him and can highly recommend.
bigh827
The Panzer III has the cow skull in it as well. It builds in to a very nice model.
Darby
I'll hunt around for a kit with the cow skull in it. It doesn't matter what else is in the box so long as I get a skull. In a similar vein, these Airfix kits which seem to be burgeoning everywhere, are these any good? I was tempted by the Cromwell or the Vickers light tank the other day but got a 109 instead. Graham Boak
The Cromwell is as good as the better Matchbox, if a little chunky, which seems to be something of an Airfix "style" but quite suits such tanks. The Vickers is quite nice (I've had three) but the finer parts are rather clumsy - rather like the poorer Matchbox (eg M40), dare I say? The Vickers tanks, and most of the Airfix modern range currently available, were produced by an ex-Airfix employee under the JB range. They were then bought up by Airfix and reissued. I don't think you'd be disappointed with either.
MikeR
One thing I always liked about the Matchbox armour kits: diorama-in-a-box! It's just a pity about the Wespe - nice base but as far as I'm aware they were never in North Africa. Mike.

It was in the 'Tunis Times,' 'Retreating Germans mow down cows in headlong retreat. Wespe crews to blame.'
bigh827
Well the markings are wrong, but there are palm trees and sand dunes in parts of Italy, but the Wespe never made it to North Africa.
AlCZ
Ohh, Matchbox AFV ! Their M-40 GMC was my first US AFV.... Have nice diorama stand with crater.... and gorgeous box art ! Later- a15 year ago i bought the same type from AFVclub in 1/35....From nostalgia...
bigh827
It gets me how some of their kits are total dogs, but others, still stand up to modern kits. I still will buy these at shows, and have the double French tank, and Churchill bridge layer in Matchbox and Revell boxes. Both kits are very nice, the Panther and Jagpanther I have both, are not very good at all, more like war gaming kits.
Graham Boak
It is tempting to see parallels with their aircraft range, where the popular mass market types were done down to a price, whereas the limited interest subjects were much finer tooled. Darby
Every manufacturer should follow Matchbox and provide a free cow skull in every kit, be it AFV, aircraft or ship Who's in for a lobby on this?
cossack52
do cows have long horns?
bigh827
Depends on the breed of cow. Texas Longhorns as we call them here can have horns that are over 12 feet (about 4 meters) from tip to tip.
