Cookenbacher
The third and final version of the Falcon in RAF service was the FGR.3A, optimized for air-to-air in addition to the original attack role. All three versions together. robvulcan
Very nice mate !, I do love the Falcon and I can't understand why we have not bought any, Incredible piece of kit. I would sooner we have these than that ugly F-35 Lighting EWW... You should do a 70s one with LAG bottom. Or a Gloss black trainer. Cheers Rob
Procopius
Love these. You should do the "RAF" F-16 from Independence Day, too.

Cookenbacher
what's up with the one lighter gray flap? K, it's based on the mis-matched panels found on later Harrier schemes: http://www.scotland-postcards.com/british_aerospace_harrier_gr7_img_0231.JPG I guess we can assume that Falcons were painted overall Med Sea Grey at one point. Rob and PC, those are some cool ideas. I think I'm taking a break from the F-16 as soon as I complete the last three currently on the bench! ThankS Dermo!

modelglue
These look completely natural in RAF tones. I love everything you've done here, I would love to see a two spot with the avionics spine and cft's.
Cookenbacher
Thanks Thomas, Modelglue and RoNAF! I think you're on to something there Modelglue - a two-seat Blk 52+, maybe with a couple Stormshadows slung underneath? Are you volunteering? trickyrich
very nice indeed!!! All three of them look great! How about a RN version? Always thought the F-16 would have made a nice naval aircraft, good for fleet point defense plus could still lug a good range of weapons around! Plus size wise good for navy's with smaller carriers. So for the Whiff a Royal Navy F-16 aboard the carrier CVA-02 HMS Duke of Edinburgh (if the Queen Elizabeth class CVA-01 carrier program hadn't been cancelled in 1966). Actually that could open up a huge range of whif aircraft possibilities! What would have happened if the RN had gotten these carriers instead of the little jump jet ones! Actually if I had time that would be a great subject matter for me...if the RAN had kept her carrier or got one from the yanks! I have been neglecting the Whif section of late,....very naughty of me!! Opppps sorry to hijack your thread.......just your lovely F-16's have inspired me!
Cookenbacher
Thanks Rich! I've read that there was a serious proposal for a carrier capable F-16 to compete with the F/A-18. Ah, I went and dragged out the book, it's Strike from the Sea by Tommy Thomason: http://tommythomason.com/ Vought teamed up with General Dynamics to propose the Vought 1602, and it ended up losing to the eventual F/A-18 under all too familiar controversy. Another intriguing possibility is to split the difference (single engine, twin tailed) and go with a naval version of the proposed Hawker/BAe P 1202-9. Hmmmm...
trickyrich
wow I have/had never heard of this project! Vought would have been a great project partner as they have a good history of naval aircraft design. Just did a quick google on it, looks interesting......something to think about! found this as well.......now you have to build it! http://darthpandanl.deviantart.com/art/Hawker-Siddeley-HS1202-9-370015331
charlie_c67
I've been thinking of a similar thing, based on a widening of the Sino-Soviet conflict in '68. What if it had spread and grown? Eastern Europe might've tried to become independent sooner and the instability leading to western forces expanding to deal with the fall out. Leads to things such as, what if the RAF didn't get the phantoms and buccaneers? Would they have got early f-15's and f-16's or something more homegrown like a supersonic hunter (assuming the TSR.2 was still cancelled. Or the FAA? Navelised F-16s, jaguars and Tornados anyone?

Been thinking along those lines myself, if I can ever get my hands on a P.1083 conversion set for the Hunter. I imagine it'd look pretty nice with the P.1109 radar nose.
Cookenbacher
The P.1202-9 has been on my mind since I read read about it in the What-if chat last spring. Procopius pointed me in the right direction for some good info on it. However, it will require quite a bit of scratching and I'm still trying to get my skills up to a point where I could attempt it. You have to find that conversion set PC - I would love to see that. Charlie, I think that a navalised Jaguar would make a lot of sense, the landing gear designed for short field ability would put it in good stead as a naval strike aircraft. Maybe a Blue Vixen in the nose?
Breaker
Great job, that looks perfect in that scheme! Almost better than a Harrier (Don't let my Dad see this )
charlie_c67
Figured it'd make sense to continue the possible carrier (and related) choices in its own thread :-) http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234971405-alternate-history-for-the-raf-rn/
