matthew9447
Hello fellow model builders! I am new to this hobby, having almost finished my 1st kit, the DHC chipmunk, the WIP can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234969747-airfix-dhc-chipmunk-t10-my-first-build/ Anyways, as I am nearing the finish line, I started to wonder about weathering and washes. Since the chipmunk is all black, I dont plan to do alot of weathering at all. However, I am planning to do atleast modest weathering on my next build, the folland gnat. I get the basics of washing, but I am really not sure what to get to prepare the wash, Ive seen MIG, vallejo, and some people who make their own. I plan to spray lacquer clear coats before washing as well. I created this thread so I can have a look at how people on this community does stuff, and I hope I can find the right method for me. So any words of advice on how to put on realistic weathering? thanks! Edited November 9, 2014 by matthew9447

caretaker13
ditto. prose explanations can be a real help (like having somebody take notes for you!) but videos are a great supplement. there's a gazillion out there, so it's just a matter of finding someone who has a teaching style you enjoy. I try to avoid the ones who need to display personal hygiene & sound effects on camera.

PC2012
Hello Matthew, Buy the weathering magazine. You can get it on-line from pocketmags.com. There are loads of other mags there too. I make my own washes using fine art oil paint from artists paint shops. Use fine grade mineral spirit as well (if you do it that way). It's a much cheaper way and you can make any colour wash you like.
