Airfix 1/48 Harrier GR3

Bought this old kit off Ebay some time ago thinking I got a bargain. Now that Airfix are virtually giving them away on their website I'm now not so sure. It's a very old mould and may even be the original release as the plastic is very brittle and the decals are less than useless. Anyway, it's time to get the kit started and see how I get on. I'm going to do it straight out of the box as that's all I tend to do anyway; I'm not that adventurous.... yet!!!

Thumbs up from the pilot at least anyway :)

Intake assembled, painted and weathered.

Main fuselage sections assembled. I had a bit of a nightmare here as the cockpit area crumbles just infront of the pilot and the right hand section just forward of the intake snapped clean in two. I'll have to go careful from now on as the plastic in this kit is stiff as you like and does not have as much give as modern kits. I will get away with it after a bit of filler and primer....he says :)

I've just been looking at your pilot......and now i'm weeping. Painting figures does not come easily to me.

I've always enjoyed painting figures since I was a young kid. I know most builds tend to omitt the pilot, but I tend to keep him in. Gives me someone to talk to whilst I'm building :)

Glad you like him.

After a few weeks away with work I managed to get a little more done this weekend. Even though I was still quite busy I achieved more than I had hoped for.

IMG_5952_zps4afab5a0.jpg

Not realising the the leading edge of the wing is not supposed to sit exactly flush with the main fuselage I made an earlier decision to to make some adjustments and fill the gap with filler.

IMG_5953_zps73d1918f.jpg

After a smooth rub down it doesn't look that bad. That said I'm sure the leading edge isn't supposed to protude as much as it did before I adjusted and filled. The crack in the cockpit section is still visible from my earlier clumsiness but I'm hoping that after fitting the intake cowling it won't be as prominent.

IMG_5964_zps8e746691.jpg

I made a point of trying to get this bit right. However, the port cannon pod still managed to slip, only coming to my attention after it had set . Besides, after some filler and a coat of paint I can hardly see this mattering.

My intention after some more filler and a final sanding is to put on the undercoat. I'm going to break with the norm and give it a black undercoat. I'm not sure what I want to achieve by this to be honest. Would anyone advise "against" this?

Chaos Black undercoat it is then. It's been a slow week for one reason or another but I'm slowing ticking along.

I'm quite happy with the way the wing join to the fuselage has turned out.

I have already painted the insides of each intake cowling prior to fitting them. It is my hope than when the actual colour scheme is sprayed on it will blend in seamlessly with these earlier coats. Naturally I'll be using some sponge to blank the compressor blades

Next stop will be a coat of Humbrol sea grey via my airbrush. I've not had much success with my airbrush since I bought it, but I am reliably informed by a friend who has recently tested it for me that it works just fine and the problem soley lies with the user. The next set of photos will surely prove this.

Happy days,

I think it's all about the correct paint selection, most of my painting has been done with tamiya paints with no problem of clogging. I used air brush ready vallejo paint last week on my tiger and that kept clogging. My paint in the cup was bubbling up wasn't sure at first what the problem was, after a little inspection found my nozzle was thick in dry paint.

Think you're right there Ozzy. I must start investing in some more suitable paints instead of soldiering on with my cheap Humbrol selection. They do ok when new, it's when they start to age the problems come.

I don't think its the price, more the maker? Tamiya paints I just give it a shake and a quick stir and pour and spray, no problems. I'm not a big fan of the vallejo through an air brush anyway, I've got a life colour set to give a go of. I've only brush painted the humbrol acrylic line and wasn't to impressed.

I will keep you posted on the life colour set, as they do various aviation sets.

Yeah, I've looked at LifeColor in the past but they don't seem to do modern aviation colours as specialist. Their standard matts may do the job however, so let me know how they fair.

Well after a week or so with the cold I've finally got back on track. Only problem is that my camera was out of action so pictures below are where I'm at now.

In the end I ditched Humbrol in favour of Tamiya, which I have found go through my airbrush with complete ease. I chose Olive Green (XF-58) and Dark Sea Grey (XF-54). It seems to have given me what I'm after and overall I'm quite pleased, given that this is my first real success with my airbrush. I then gave the model a few coats of Humbrol Clear (about the only Humbrol product I've managed to get through my airbrush without any dramas), ready for some decal application.

So here you are:

Looking for a little advice whilst I painstakingly apply 1001 decals. I'm using Humbrol DecalFix and this product seems to react badly with Tamiya paint. I've watered it down for the time being but can anyone recommend a decal softener that doesn't react with Tamiya's paints?

I use Micro Set and Micro Sol and these have never had any effect on any of the paints I have used: Tamiya, Xtracrylics, Humbrol, Lifecolor, Model Air or Model Colour. You might find it useful to apply a gloss varnish (Humbrol Clear?) before applying decals or solutions. The gloss will help prevent silvering of the decals and give a good surface for them to stick to, and it should be protection for the paint from the decal solutions. Once the decals are really dry you can spray a thin coat of your chosen varnish to seal the decals and give the desired final finish; I used Windsor and Newton Galleria acrylic varnishes available in Hobbycraft and art shops, but others here use a variety of final finishes.

Cheers Natter, just ordered the pair. The product seems to having great reviews. Incidentally I did coat the plane with some humbrol clear but the decalfix just reactivated the paint underneath. Never had the problem before switching to Tamiya acrylics.
