rustywelder
I was thinking last night that I might convert the old Matchbox/revell Escort XR-3 into a series 1. I'm hoping that someone with better familiarity might be able to say, is this possible? Was the Series 1 turbo sold in left hand drive markets? That apears to be my biggest issue on the face of it as the XR-3 is a left hand drive kit and I'm not sure I have the skill to make a right hand drive dash. ptcruiser
The Turbo RS came with a different grill and front spoiler which will need scratch building. I attempted in my Yoof but I will revisit it. I wanted to build the Turbo Datapost car (a year after the one in the box). I need new wheels too which are unique but I may have found a solution to that. Just one of the pile of projects Rich Edited October 28, 2014 by ptcruiser
bhouse
I didn't realise they produced a turbo version of the Mk 1. One lives and learns...
Bonhoff
Series 1 RST (I think) was based on the RS1600i externally. Ford did the RS1600i in both LHD and RHD but not sure if the RST was built in LHD. Group A homologation required 5000 to be produced. Don't know if the UK market would have coped with that many, so I guess that there should be LHD versions.
JonD77
It's not a MK1, it's actually a MKIII series 1 RS Turbo. The grill isnt the only difference, the RST came with a RS body kit, which is a lower front spoiler, wheel arches, side skirts all of which are colour coded along with the grill and rear spoiler and bumpers. The RST also came with a set of RS alloy wheels, RS decal on the side and front Recaro seats. Pretty much all of the RST's where produced in white, with the exception of a small number in red and an even smaller number In black. I'm not 100% but I think only the RST and the RS1600i came with rear opening windows, were as the XR3/3i's where not openable. Both the XR3/3i and the RST shared the same CVH engine, albeit with different internals Edited October 28, 2014 by JonD77
A6-EHJ
There was only one series one painted in black and that was for Princess Diana. A few red like you said but most were in diamond white. The S1 was also Known as the white lightning. The S1 first came out on a B registration and the last ones came out on a D and these are very rare indeed. The custom S1 had Electric windows and normal back windows and the non custom mostly on a B plate had wind up windows and pop out back windows and no sunroof. whitestar12chris
Hi one thing you might want to check out, I used to own an original H reg Fiesta Turbo straight off the production line and then a J reg example to replace the stolen H one. The suspension on the RS was lowered by 6 inches compared to the XR2i example, it was very noticeable when parked side by side with an XR2, I think the same could be said for the XR3i against the RS Escort as they shared a lot of the same running gear. Hope this helps, all the best Chris
capri-schorsch
Both of them, the RSi and the RS Turbo got also LHD. I knew that because i owned both of them in these days.Unfortunately the RSi was totally wrecked when i missed a curve and landed onto the roof. The RST was a great car,but my heart still hangs on the RSi. greeting from germany
rustywelder
Thanks Chris. And Capri, thanks as well. I have yet to find any pics of a lhd example, but I suspected they would exist. If I am not mistaken weren't all of the hot escorts other than the Cossie developed by Ford Cologne?
