Rick Brown
Chaps. I'm after suggestions for repairing a 1/48th damaged canopy. This is from the Academy MKXIVe low back Spitfire. The kit was sold as "New, to you Sir" and everything was fine with the kit, except the canopy had broken off the sprue. Any suggestions? I'm pretty sure I can build up the damaged frame area with de-gassed cyano, but the clear part is the real problem. I'd hate to have to buy a vac canopy, kinda doubles the price of the kit! Rick. Rick Brown
I've though about that D, but the damage is under the surface to a degree. I did soak some Klear onto it in the hope that it may penetrate the surface. This has made it slightly better. Also, Krystal Klear doesn't dry very hard, so I think I'd have trouble sanding and polishing it back. Rick.
Panzer Vor!!!
Hi I thought KK got harder the longer it was left but then I've never treid to sand it Not sure Rick looks a pain and irritating as well Dave
Rick Brown
Yep, bit of a problem Dave. I've considered grinding it out and rebuilding it with KK (not KKK of course!) and cynao. Not sure if it ever goes rock hard, it certainly doesn't after a couple of months. Rick.
Panzer Vor!!!
I know its not the answer you're looking for but couldn't you put a piece of tissue or bandage over it? Make it look like the canopy has being sheeted over against the elements or someone's flight jacket? Dave
Rick Brown
That was considered too! I may have to make it look like a bit of a local repair. Did they have Duct tape back then?! Rick.
Panzer Vor!!!
Hi I dunno about the duct tape but the advantage of modelling tanks and softskins any probs like this are covered by mud or a camo net ------So much easier The last time I had probs with a windshield I just left it off no one said anything Dave
Rick Brown
Lol! Maybe I need to switch to armour! I may have to go down this route: https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/SQS9626 But that's as much as the kit cost! Hmm, pondering. Rick.
Panzer Vor!!!
Ok You can Buy new canopy Appeal for a replacement on BM Have a look in the second hand boxes at shows for the kit Dave
Rick Brown
Yep, on me way to the "Wanted" section. The trouble with me digging through old kits at a show is many fold. The kit I'll buy will get built, and more bits would be needed, so I'd buy another old kit and use that then want to build that...... it'll just go on and on and I'd end up with hundreds of Academy MKXIV Spits on the shelf!
