RWD-13, Escadrila Alba, Romania - 1/72 Broplan (vacu)

Hi,

A second post with vacu model. This is Polish tourer/sport airplane RWD-13 (1/72 vacu by

Broplan company). More about this machine can be read for example here:

It was developed from experience gathered with earlier tourers by RWD: RWD-2, RWD-5, RWD-6 and first of all the RWD-9. Two latest types (RWD-6 and then RWD-9) won twice fameous Challanges - a light airplanes competitions organized in Europe in begining of thirties.

It is more or less OOB, if vacu can be OOB. Some details are of course added. She is wearing markings of Romanian ambulance of East front. The pecularity is, that those machines were piloted by women pilots. More on this exceptional squadron ("Escadrila Alba" - the "White Squadron") can be read for example here:

I made this model some years ago. Now there are kits of it in 1/72 (resin and polystyrene) as well as 1/48 (resin only)

Please have a look at the photos :) - any comments welcomed

Regards

Jerzy-Wojtek

Hi Jerzy:

I have enjoyed watching this one and for me is IMPRESSIVE!!!

Believe it or not, this little plane is one of the most elusive to me, the other is the RWD 9.

I have managed to collect many RWD's when I read about the Atlantic Crossing by Colonel Pilot (Plk pil) Stanislaw Jakub Skarzynski in 1933 and bought the first ZTS Rwd 5 kit to make this, who BTW still have the record of its class. Then bought the others in Ebay.

I have read about the many services of this little ship in Israeli, Spanish, Polish, Brazilian and Romanian air Forces too but seems out of my reach. Maybe one day it will be, while I like to enjoy the one you have posted here as testimony that really this exist, as I have watched many times for the Astra kit in Ebay but nothing has been materialized and never knew a Vac kit was made, but have to watch harder.....maybe.

Thank you very much for sharing your nice collection, which I really have enjoyed a huge lot.

Cheers,

Luis Alfonso

Thank you very much Luis for your post! I did not expected that someone outside Poland can know so much on RWD factory and their brillant small airplanes. I thought that it is rather forgotten story for world. I am very glad to here opposite :),

Aster 1/72 RWD is a polystyrene (injected) short-run, it was issued I think in 2010. Sometimes I've seen it in model shops in Poland. There is also much more expencive (about 30 euro) resin kit by Ardpol (also 1/72), and it is newer. I am pretty sure that there is no problem with buying them in Polish Internet model shops. If you want I can help you finding it. Broplan vacu is much harder to get in my country. There is a kit (resin) in 1/48 - I am not sure who produce it.

BTW - I have now found nice web page about RWD 9 and 13:

Thank you Dave, Darby and Mitch for comments, apprecieted :)

Hi Jerzy:

I knew about the RWD 5 thanks to the old Allan Hall's Magazine Scale Aircraft Modeling back in late eigthies, (1987 I think) when someone of his friends in Poland sent one MICRO-ZTS kit to Bryan Thorme and he reviewed this nice little plane, when I saw it instantly fall in love with the idea of having one.

And, after all I have to wait dreaming until my access to Ebay USA in 2010 when I found one and instantly bought it. Now I have some three I have found to make the two SP-AJU Skarzynski's versions: one with the tank and one with two seats, the record breaking RWD 6 two versions, and was thinking in buy two or three more RWD 6 to convert to a RWD 9 and maybe try the RWD 13 as have made some plan comparisons that it could be possible, but time is not in my favour to try for now. Maybe in the time to come.

Thank you very much for the lin to RWD 13, I have now more material to continue dreaming with those nice and lovely polish lighplanes!!!

Cheers,

Luis Alfonso

That is very interesting story, you have told :)

It might be interesting for you and perhaps also for some other BM readers, that there is a new monography (unfortunatelly in Polish) on RWD 6 and 9 issued by ZP (number ZPG 0777), title "Samoloty sportowe RWD-6 i RWD-9" ("Sport airplanes RWD 6 and 9") , by Andrzej Glass. From what I've seen in the Net there is a lot of photos and plans of different variants of those two types. You may easily google it. It would be a great help doing those machines.

Cheers

Hi Jerzy:

Thank you very much for the info about the new monography, it would be interesting to have a copy.

I was thinking I wish be married to a nice polish girl, if I have had, I probably would have a wonderful collection of polish books and planes and have learned the language to read it. :)......But anytime, any doubt I'll tell you for help, without a doubt is better to have an expert at hand for special tasks advisory. Thank you very mcuh for your kindness.

Cheers,

Thank you Ed and Adrian :)

I have just found another article and colour photo of a part of this machine:

http://www.rosocken.se/Events/MarinaStirbeyEng.aspx

The yellow is not reproduced on this photo properly (the Romanian flag looks like French on the tail of machine in the background)

The yellow band is just after red cross. This is likely 1942, since in 1941 the yellow was narrow and moved to the front

Cheers

Hello,

I made this kit 3 years ago. It was made by Ardpol - Poland. I have some informations about the white squadron, as my origin is from Romania.

Just to make an idea :

Hi,

Seagladiator, your RWD is a nice build! You made the large door open and detailed inside...

However the Ardpol kit is another kit - the resin one whereas Broplan is vacu. Although both are Polish.  I am thinking on doing another Romanian transpot machine, a bit heavier - namely Potez 65. Currently I have started RWD-9 from Spanish Civil War :)
