1/72 Eduard Lavochkin La-7 (Dual Combo)

Recommended Posts

While working on my "big one" - Airfix 1/72 Lancaster BII - I have completed these two kits on the side.

They are from Eduard's "Dual Combo" set which comes with Photo-Etch parts and an extensive decal sheet.

Both kits were built from the box with the addition of SBS resin spinners - the kit's items look a little bit like "Kremlin's Towers".

I also added Rob Taurus vacu canopy on "White 24", as the plastic kit part is too thick to fit over the back section of the cockpit.

Both kits were painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics and weathered with artist's oils and pastels.

Metal blanking plates behind the exhausts were painted with Alclad II.

The pitot tubes were exchanged for a piece of wire.

So, first here's "White 24", the mount of Major Sultan Ahmet Khan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amet-khan_Sultan) of III/9.GIAP, 1945.

According to Wikipedia, there's also a movie about his life: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haytarma

Sultan Ahmet Khan was killed in 1971 while flying a Tupolev Tu-16LL.

They're both lovely builds, again the burnt metal is very nice. The decals are really nice too, did you put white down before you laid them by any chance, or is it just the decals? I sometimes find the white to be too thin, showing the colours underneath, but those are just lovely!

Odd.

Gorgeous work! How well does the kit go together?

Thanks, Mitch.

Kit goes together without any serious problems; the undercarriage is a bit fiddly to assemble, especially the tail wheel when fitted after the fuselage halves have been closed (to avoid breaking it off).

There are some shape issues:

I believe the undercarriage is too high, the nose section with gun ports is a bit off.

High quality resin upgrades can be obtained here, I consider using them for the next build of that type:

However, a brand new KP Kit of the La-5/La-7 has been announced, so that might be another option.

No White has been applied - Eduard's decals are strong in colour and very good quality.

I've just done of these, 'tis a nice kit. Yours are both superb. I used Akan paints for the 1st time on mine, and was very impressed. Thought the AMT-11 and -12 were too dark till I saw your pics, they come out about the same as those you used.

Very nice indeed! Lovely little kits aren't they? You've done a great job, I especially like the bare metal panels. Do you recall which Gunze Acrylics you used for the Soviet AMT colours?

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks for your feedback, Bill.

I used the following Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylic paints:

H301 / H317 for upper surfaces (both faded with a drop of white)

H67 (aka RLM65) for undersides

H307 for interior, wheel wells, undercarriage

regards

Roman
