Airfix 1/72 Stuka ...Italian style......finally FINISHED!

Recommended Posts

Well my self imposed abstinence lasted about a week... :bounce:

The BV 141 nearly killed me (and others) but I'm back up off the canvas and ready to enthrall you with my modest skill and snail paced build speed.

So chocks away!

It's the Airfix 1/72 Stuka old school mould and I'm doing it out of the box and without any fancy pants carry on and in Italian livery....well decals anyway.

I really have to cure my ridiculous obsession with weird warbirds from the Third Reich.......Allied build next I promise!

Here's the box art....why not eh....?

Well most of the box art anyway

I actually washed the sprues for the very first time. I have no idea if that's necessary....I really don't.

BUT! I did it anyway and then dried them on my wife's lovely striped tea towel

10703512_347357035426094_624607570081332

I started gluing a few bits...

Sorry this photo is a bit crappy ......but there's not much to see anyway :mental:

10702070_347357308759400_804428103011458

Then I did whatever bit's I could without paint required...yet! :analintruder:

10678847_347357132092751_310232003361873

So that's it.....

Off we go again LOL! :guitar:

Entertaining too, based on the BV.141 thread.....I remember how marvelous this kit seemed when it first came out and it still looks the part to me, despite being a bit pimply!

Pimply!!! When you picked up the BV141 it was like holding a pineapple :hypnotised:

Anyway the Stuka even though it has raised surface detail it's definitely much much much finer......so I'm leaving it.

As I said this one will be OOB .....the effort for me on this one will be improving the standard of my finish.

Chocks away!

This will certainly be a winner! :footy:

Simple things you can add to your cockpit: seat belts to the seat, make them out of Tamiya tape painted in the correct colour (Buff I reckon) and the buckles make out of fine electrical wire. Don't need to use glue since the tape is self adesive, and voilá! Simple things that improve the interior a lot.

I'll send you some reference over your email

Foloowing!

Thanks Paulo......I wasn't going to do much inside because I want to try finishes mainly.

But having said that..... I probably won't be able to help myself! :banghead:

Look forward to the email

Cheers

Quick post before heading out to eat and drink way too much with our friends around the corner!

Anyway here's the sort of fix for the canyons.

Didn't quite work how I hoped though...damn!

Masked up the canyons and spread Mr Surfacer in between.

10622825_347617475400050_808052294949229

Peeled off the masking....was hoping it would be better. Will try my tamiya putty instead next

10600490_347617592066705_260505212275420

Bit of gentle sanding but it's still average

10345830_347617632066701_300594606280015

started tidying up the tanks etc...top one done.....bottom one to go

10653289_347659142062550_867420805864813

Here they are tidied up nicely

10411780_347659312062533_425087848207847

Not bad

Rudimentary instrument panel

10687122_347668615394936_161913047824987

some intake grill thingy....

10355016_347672242061240_889047980085226

Interior of fuse dirtied up.....not worried here just wanted a bit of grime. Most of this is under the pit floor and the rest will be very hard to see

10710829_347672355394562_586026436991021

Here's the cockpit dirtied up and scuffed up and ready for installing

10628224_347672658727865_489116092298764

Might get on with a bit more tomorrow as it's a public holiday here ......if my hangover is not too evil!!! :drink::doh:

Thanks for looking....

Another thing: Check that gap you've put Mr Surface, from here it looks it need another coat and sanding.

Yep! I'm having another crack tomorrow after spray painting a mates shed in the morning.....things I think are a good idea when drunk .... :banghead:

This time I will tape as close as I can to the canyon walls and I think I'll use Tamiya putty instead...just a bit more robust.

See how we go!

Cheers!

Looking good.

I have tried MrSurfacer, it's great stuff but does need a few coats for big gaps. I tried a water based filler recently which is ideal for that sort of deep join gap. Because it can be cleaned of with water you won't damage any of the kit's surface.

All the best.

Nice model to play with! I am sure the result will be great!

Yeah, Mr Surfacer is excellent, but like you, deep cracks have never disappeared in one pass... Two or three is the average... Patience is a virtue...

I believe the Airfix Stuka was a massive improvement on their very first Ju 87, and it was the nec plus ultra in its days... I think we are getting more exigent and sometimes it's a shame.

There is still an old Revell Ju 87 on my shelf of doom, and I will finish it one day. But it looks more basic than yours. So enjoy, and Italian markings are "sexy"!

Decided to have another crack at the canyons....wasn't happy first time around

Masked up again

1920533_348066085355189_4549800341025662

smoothed in some Tamiya White putty with scalpel

10269344_348066228688508_641923535652725

Masking removed

10711062_348066282021836_750144162537687

Bit of sanding and a tidy up with Tamiya polishing compound

10665702_348077055354092_582250912330705

Much better and probably good enough for an impatient mug punter like myself

Cheers

Looking good mate!

Thanks Paulo

Because the cockpit is so open I am going to have a look at how to make seatbelts and do exactly that.

Thanks for the idea and encouragement

Won't do anything else...just a couple of seatbelts for a bit of interest and also contrast to the dirty RLM02

Cheers!

Righto bit more progress and probably it for the long weekend here.....god bless public holidays!

Time to button her up.

Decided on the method....if anyone's seen the build I'm trying it "Mal's way"!

This involves working your way down the fuse in sections using a decent amount of liquid cement. My favourite and I just don't think I'll ever use anything else is Tamiya ultra thin. Love it. Very aggressive (be careful) but brilliant

So Mal is one of the excellent modellers on here and this was the method he described to get a strong bond that required little filler for seams....this is "Mal's way" and it's great

Front part of fuse joined and then cement run into the seam....squeezed tightly until the plastic "melts" and oozes out of the join.

The resulting ooze when hardened is carefully sanded and there you go .....pristine seam...."Mal's way"

10406770_348125582015906_222131206900269

Worked my way along the fuse

10703594_348125695349228_916561508720076

Bit along toward the tail....

10622855_348125178682613_262746926558617

and a bit on the tail as well (bit blurry sorry!)

9975_348125192015945_7864818904904791643

Same was done on the upper surfaces as I worked along the fuse

Here's a shot of the pit...

1653942_348125368682594_6778445688524238

Looks a bit grimey and dirty and should be okay under glass.

Bit of sanding on the seams and that will be it before work intrudes again I think.

Thanks to Mal for showing me the "WAY!" ...

Cheers

Bruce

I continue to chip away!

Mal's way did a good job on most of the old bird but some moulding issues and a few nasty seams meant masking and Tamiya white putty.

Here's the masking.....

10686984_348188572009607_685130371517016

10484926_348188872009577_685426005729071

Tamiya putty

1474469_348191802009284_1532563776206670

10671255_348191955342602_612428929480838

10703741_348191998675931_325018853483640

Mask removed ready for sanding

1234632_348192362009228_6462123401267729

Looks rough but will tidy up well

Cheers
