Panther: 135 of 12 SS Pz,

Tiger: 131 of sSSPzAbt 101

These are the first tanks I've built since who knows when. I'm pretty certain I must have built one or more when I was young (but I can't remember) and there's been none since. If I did make any they wouldn't have been made or painted properly.

Both these German tanks were made as part of a diorama for the D-Day Group build. I need to say a big thank you to Sgt.Squarehead, Shermaniac and Brews for their assistance with choosing suitable tanks.

Both tanks have some additions to what's provided in the box - the Panther has a spare wheel (mounted on the turret) plus an improved shovel and the Tiger has track links (mounted on the turret) both kindly sent me by Sgt.Squarehead. The Tiger also has the longer towing cable mounted on the side of the hull, which I fabricated from bits of left over cable from both Dragon kits and ends from the Panther kit.

Both kits were really enjoyable to make and everything is brush painted with Humbrol and Revell acrylics applied with hairy sticks.

The WIP can be found here

Photos of the diorama they form part of can be found here

Thank you for looking. My RFI for another D-Day build, of Jerry Billing's Mk.IX Spitfire, can be found here.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Hi Steve, Matt, Carius, Sarge, Oz!, Jack, Kuro and Steve. Thank you all for the very kind comments. Having thoroughly enjoyed making these tanks I'm definitely going to have to make some more 1/72 ones (but also, possibly, a 1/35 version at some point - but don't let the Sarge know! )

Hi batcode, Farnarkle, nacho, Ian, Kev and fredben - thank you all for your very kind comments.

farnarkle and Ian - the rocket smoke trails are done with standard pipe cleaners but I sprayed them with hairspray and then pulled my fingers down the length to get the bristles(?) to go in one direction backwards. Then I added a bit of yellow and red acrylic paint almost dry-brushed at the front.

Kind regards,

Stix

  • 2 weeks later...

I mentioned a while ago that I'd redo some of the photos of all my D-Day builds in black and white but it's taken until now to get them sorted:

Nicely done! I feel sorry for the poor Shermans that encounter them.

Some of those Shermans had direct radio links with the Typhoons, so shooting at, or even being spotted by one could result in a never-ending rain of bombs & rockets.....The 'Cab Ranks' of Typhoons and P-47s must have been utterly terrifying for German AFV crews, they certainly did their best to dress-up every AFV in Normandy (& thereafter on the western front) as a bush!

I have to work hard to get into my head that these are 1:72nd scale.

Superb work!

Kind regards,

Joachim

Thank you for the kind comments Joachim. I think a lot has to do with how good the Dragon kits are - I was very impressed with the level of detail.

Hi Sarge - thank you for the additional info.

Kind regards,

Stix

When you think about it, the firepower of the 'Cab-Ranks' was utterly monstrous.....Take a rank of Typhoons with bombs, flying at short range they could haul a pair of thousand pounders, so with a typical rank you are looking at about four B-17s worth of HE, laid with great precision, over a period of about 10-15 minutes. And that's assuming they don't call for backup! :analintruder:

Cheers Dazdot and Sarge. Even though I'm currently working on two Spitfire projects at the moment, I have a real urge to make another tank! I think I may have a vague idea for another diorama but we'll see!

Kind regards,

Stix
