Nearlymen
After a bit of a false start regarding posting photos I thought you might like to see this. Really I'm an Aircraft man (Fleet Air Arm and a bit of WW2 Luftwaffe) but I like to dabble in other things since all modelling is 'Good Modelling' ! I have a great interest in The Lynton and Barnstaple and decided to build an imaginary layout based upon similar lines to the L and B in 7mm O-16.5 scale. Find below some pics of my Baldwin that I built by converting a bachmann forney with a backwoods minatures conversion kit which was then made more 'british' in outline ! Sound card in the cab (since obscured by crew members). Hope you like the look of her ! Nearlymen
Hi, Thanks for the kind comments. Although I didn't post a build thread I did take a few photos during the build and it went like this ! IMGP2966 by Nearlymen, on Flickr First off Find yourself a Forney. I used the outside frame version. IMGP2965 by Nearlymen, on Flickr You'll also need a backwoods conversion set, plus I bought a wooden cab from Bachmann USA. IMGP2958 by Nearlymen, on Flickr IMGP2959 by Nearlymen, on Flickr I built a small plastic jig to assemble the body work on and deviated from the instructions by fixing the tanks to the cab, cut down the rear coal bunker and also cut away the rear cab overhang then infilled the open back. The coal rails started life as the ladder from the old Airfix water tower kit ! IMGP2969 by Nearlymen, on Flickr I disassembled the Forney and removed all the 'Americana' losing the baldwin smokebox door in the process. This was replaced by a OO whitemetal smokebox door for a 14XX GWR 0-4-2, and a brass casting for the handles. The chassis was then cut back in length as per backwoods instructions but slightly more than they suggested as I'd shortened the coal bunker to a more British outline. I also removed the American pilot step and built up a more British style buffer beam out of plasticard. IMGP2970 by Nearlymen, on Flickr IMGP2971 by Nearlymen, on Flickr The two pics above show the test fitting of the body to the loco frame. A sound card was added to the cab and a speaker glued in the roof. The alternative pony truck supplied with the forney would then be cut down, modified and put under the cab. IMGP3014 by Nearlymen, on Flickr The Loco was then taken apart and sprayed in Maunsell loco green (It's the L and B fetish coming through !) IMGP3017 by Nearlymen, on Flickr And that's the end result, Vac pipes fitted and Nameplates made by Narrow planet. Not quite a build thread but you get the idea ! The one good thing about modelling in 7mm O 16.5 is that you more or less have to make everything yourself be it rolling stock or whatever. I made some coaches and wagons as well that were also L and B inspired, and the modelling skills used on aircraft readily transferred to railways....no problem !
