Airfix Bristol Blenheim Mk1

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Right I have decided finally, I would like to build the above kit. I am only going to state I will build one kit so I have a chance of finishing!!! I may use parts from the MPM kit also where I think they may be better which to start with is the engines as they look a little odd with slightly skinny cylinders. I have looked at the MPM engines and they are nice resin examples and look as though they may fit with some fettling. I doubt I will use much from the MPM kit though as the Airfix kit looks very nice anyway.

I will start with the obligatory box/components shot followed by a shot of one of the MPM engines.

I am a big fan of large Tail fin flashes and I have been trawling t'internet for such an example without much success, in the June 2011 Model Aircraft magazine there is a picture of a 45 squadron machine with large fin flash and in my favoured dark green/dark earth colouring with squadron codes OB-A during July 1940 in Sudan presumably before the dark green would have been overpainted. The only problem is there is no serial number also this machine was named The Cheshire Cheese (they named their machines after pubs) so if anyone could help with that I would be grateful. May have to look at alternative schemes unless I can find a set for this or a sister machine around that time.

Will start soon.

All the best
Chris

Chris,

Looking forward to this, I haven't seen many of these actually built. 45 Squadron wasn't actually a Bomber Command unit, but 90, 104 and 108 all operated Mk1's with BC. I have some serial numbers, not sure about individual codes.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

I'm struggling to find any any squadron codes to match the serials I have.

Does anyone have Chorley's Bomber command Losses vol 1 - if so could they see if they can find any squadron markings for 90, 104 or 108 losses?

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete

I have found out that by the time the war started the 1's had all been replaced in Bomber Command and had been transferred to Overseas Commands.

In view of that could I ask that this thread is deleted and I will choose something else to build instead, I may possibly do a Wellington 1C, as I have a Trumpy 1/48th kit in the stash.

Thanks for your help Pete

Hi Neil

Now the dates have been changed I can build one, I have some decals now sorted and will start soon, (am currently in the process of doing a PM C45 Expeditor and a NZ Display Harvard) so will be doing a bit on each, should still get this one finished that way, would not have a chance of finishing a Wimpy at my pace.

Right Decals have arrived, I have on order the Pavla undercarriage bays detailing set so will be making a start shortly.

I have taken the MPM engines from their casting blocks, removed the firewall section and cut what I presume is the gear housing on the front of each engine off. Will post some piccies soon when progress warrants it.

The machine I will be modelling is K7037/B of 90 squadron Raf Bicester 1938.

Good choice Chris,

The pre war 90 Sqn scheme is one of my favourite Blenheim schemes,.....but were the codes and sqn number yellow, in flight colours or Medium Sea Grey, does anybody know for sure? I`m not saying this to put you off,...far from it,.....but if anybody out there does know it might help?

Cheers

Cheers Neil, with the Pavla set you get the sides to the U/C bays and there are a series of holes in two lines along their length, I was going to do the red colour in the holes with a heavy wash so as to show the tanks behind them if you know what I mean.

Hi all

Thanks Pete.

I have finally started, First up are the MPM engines cut them off the casting blocks and cut the gearbox areas off too.

Added the rear spar and start of the U/C legs, have thinned out the lower nacelles to accept the strengthening sections from the Pavla U/C bay sides

Paint on

I am wondering whether the fuel tanks would be visible through the holes in the U/C bay sides and whether they will be the reddy coloured self sealing material or not.

Thanks for looking, more progress soon.

Hi All

Further work, filled the two ejector marks in the top of the Nacelles, had to heat and bend a bit of sprue and stick some wet and dry on it to get in there.

The carpet monster ate the strengtheners half way along so I made some new ones out of plastic card

Not sure whether to fit the front strengtheners, will have to see how the undercarriage fits in before deciding. The wings went together well but, the lower wing needed thinning out between the two spars either side of the nacelles to allow the resin bits as you would expect. I was initially worried about taking too much out but when assembled is strong thanks to the spars.

My SBS resin propellers arrived today and they look very good.

Thanks for looking

Hi all

Bit more progress, Wheel wells now finished off with the strengthening ribs, only had to make one of the front ones.

Fuselage went together well.

Rudder actuator arms cut off and replaced with rod

Cockpit glazing attached, went together well

Did away with the Kit seat apart from the cushion as I used the Airwaves seat for the old Frog kit

Added some framing to the cockpit, still ongoing.

You're doing some nice work on this kit - it's looking great, and I really like the additions you've made in the cockpit.

I might have to get myself one of these kits.

Cheers

Stuart
