Revell 1/48th RAF Tornado GR1A.......

Recommended Posts

Thanks Steve.......appreciated,

I have inappropriate feelings of affection for such wonderful objects.......

I'll set up a meeting for you...........somewhere quiet and secluded, mood music..........a glass of single malt and a hob nob maybe... just don't let Memsahib Fritag know ....

Good lord yes...hadn't re read it, my proof reader is downstairs engrossed in Downton Abbey..........Sorry, bit of a faux pas there...typed in a moment of pure madness whilst watching the Singapore GP...that'll teach me not to try typing and modelling whilst shouting at Fernado Alonso whilst juggling a large mixed kebab on my lap....

Amended...... .....now no one will ever know.....'cept of course it's still in your message...

Shaun , yep received and replied to...

Thanks Exdraken, glad you like it...

I am pretty certain that those words have never been written in that order before...

Excellent work General. You have a surprising number of errors sorted. Perhaps CAD makes it easier to make a kit fit better and more likely to be incorrect. Didn't they used to make larger scale versions of the models and pantograph them down to make the molds?

Is it me or is that bulge at the base of the fin between the intake and exhaust far too prominent?

I am afraid that I already have historical instances of behaviour on similar seats that I am not proud of and am unwilling to repeat on a public forum.........I can only plead youthful enthusiasm and a historical difference in attitude in mitigation............:)

Thanks Plastic, I'm not really sure what Revell do but I suspect you could well be right !

As for the base of the fin, yep that is something that I am aware of too, (just working up a list of things at the mo) and will address very soon.....It seems that the section is just too fat and has a prominent bulge which looks odd. The real thing is flatter though I don't think it'll be too difficult to get it right......

Here's the real thing taken from the walkaround section.......you can see it's definitely flatter with a more subtle top edge.....I have a feeling that the front section is more bulked out too !

And other shots of the area......the area is quite prominent ...

Free wallpaper but if you click on the F.3 selected you can clearly see the shape of the unit....

And here's Revells version....just looks wrong !.......

Looking great and I see there are yet more things to correct. These days you think companies would follow Dapol of the Model Railway world who release CAD of their work before the molds are made so people can point out detail errors and help them get it right before they cut the metal.

It would be nice to see Revell Airfix etc do this, Though I know it would be risky to competitors seeing what they are up to etc.

Looking great and nice seats

Bourbons !!...Good grief....I wouldn't eat a Frenchman if he were glazed in honey !'....Pete, your'll just have to make do with a jeroboam of Old Moorhens Shredded Sporran which is winging its way to you as we speak...along with a couple of packets of salt and vinegar flavoured custard creams !

Rob, I suppose it's a risk asking for advice from the 'collective' whilst preparing a project away form the gaze of the competion but when left to their own devices this is what can happen....it's a shame really but better researchers would be in order for some of these companies......or at least a quick look on 'tinternet and sites like this if they're stuck !! For some silly reason I always imagine that they have huge archives of original data and photographs at their fingertips...but then maybe not.

Thanks Houston, appreciated as ever....

Managed to finished the basic cockpit and everything's been put into the tub, nothing glued yet as I need to and a bit of plumbing first and be sure that it all fits ! You can't really see it but I fitted a 2.5mm green lens into the CRPMD binacle which gives a nice representation of the unit... Hopefully I'll get on with the undercarriage next and as usual there's a fair bit to cram in there....

..

The bulkhead behind the rear seat has some material covering it, (reminds me of plastic groundsheet material !), so I'll try and replicate this using either crushed aluminium foil or crumpled wt n dry paper. The climate control system tubes need tan/pink coloured hoses fitting too, I'll probably get hold of some 1mm perl hosing from Little-Cars at the next show..

GR4 from walkaround section..I assume the GR1A had the same...

Excellent work there General, are you sure those seats are not 1/32 and you're telling fibs that it's 1/48?

...These days you think companies would follow Dapol of the Model Railway world who release CAD of their work before the molds are made so people can point out detail errors and help them get it right before they cut the metal...

IIRC when Bachmann were 'designing' their model of the Deltic prototype they went up the the National Railway Museum with a laser scanner and scanned the original. OK this might be a bit awkward when producing a model of the Hawker-Sikorsky Hedge Sparrow (sadly the last remaining one was lost when a scrap merchant mistook it for an Austin Allegro Estate and sent it to The Far East for recycling), but if the model is a Tonka or a Bucc of which there are one or two around then surely that would be the best way of generating accurate CAD drawings?

Keep up the good work General

Al

Love the seats General!! However it looks as if there are 4 shoulder straps per seat! The ones you have hanging down the sides with the QRB fasteners on the seat pad don't exist on the Mk10 seat. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!!

Thanks again guys, Al yep, you're right..no excuses really. There's nothing quite like taking data from the original and some companies are definitely better than others for this though most have some error or another which is to a degree understandable, it's really about to what degree it is. Apparently Airfix were at Cosford taking measurements of the Valiant and yet they still managed to get some basic things wrong seemingly relying more on inaccurate drawings for some reason, though their later efforts seem better for this. The less said about certain far east companies the better, but I'm really surprised at Revell with this one. Having said that none of the errors are insurmountable and for me just makes the building more fun in a perverse way...

Thanks Wasa, no problem as I haven't glued the seats in yet I can adjust them............this is where the collective specialist knowledge comes into its own !

The straps I thought had the QRB fasteners on actually seem to be part of the large triangular seat 'strap ?'....I'll just tuck em into the lower piece as per the photos,

Here's a scan of an RAFG GR1A seat photo...

Thanks eng, I know what you mean...too many models just not enough time !

No probs General.

There are only two qrb fasteners on the tornado seat straps which are on the shoulder straps. The lap strap ends are a rectangular metal loop through which the crotch straps fit and the qrb fasteners go through the crotch strap loops and into the qrb therefore holding the driver or passenger onto his/her rocket powered armchair. The straps you pointed out in your photo are in fact part of the parachute harness. The lower strap in your photo is one of the crotch starps and shows the loop the qrb fastener goes through. HTH
