dawkuk
Hi, lads. My T-55 is still not done, but i got a liitle fed up with that project. So i decided to start with somethin new and finish it really fast. Ther is modelling contest in town in two weeks and i intend to go there with that little truck. Quad Gun Tractor is a Tamiya's golden oldie. It has been molded in 1976. I'm going to build it straight out of box. No PE parts, no resin. Focus will be put on painting and weathering techniques. That's it. Here's what i've got so fat: That's the thing. And here's what's inside the box. First i started with engine. Easy to build. All the parts fit very well. Wheels done, tyres not glued yet. Aaaand a ilttle overview. So far, it's fast and easy. 14 days left to contest

gruffy
Great start! Love the quad after seeing one at a airshow.
phildagreek
It's a good little kit, typical Tamiya, builds up into a nice little truck, begging for the limber and gun though.

louiex2
Looking forward to seeing your techniques. It's great kit that got me started on my collection of WW II "ugly" trucks- built tough and for an intended purpose- not for beauty.
arni
It is pug ugly but appealing all the same, here is one I built a few years ago.
John_W
Looks armoured, but the shape was designed to be easy to was down after a gas attack. Realy fancy building the full set with limber and 25 Pounder.
dawkuk
Thanks guys for kind words. There is a certain amount of beauty in that little truck. Arni, yours Quad looks great. I'm going for two-colout pain scheme. We'll see how it'll look. Made some progress today, and i will post some pics tomorrow.
dawkuk
Although i found couple of pics i made yesterday. Here they are: Undercarriage. Transfer case. The same without wheels. And a little more bodywork. Enjoy.
foxy
Nice going on this iconic vehicle. There were so many variations of this vehicle, some built in other countries. Foxy
dawkuk
Thank you, foxy. Tham means a lot. Made some progress. There it is: Undercarriage is done. Also did some more on interior. Put the seat on. They're not glued yet. It'll be easier to paint them separately. The cover will require some work. Couple layers of Surfacer should do the trick. And the overview. Don't tell me this is not a beauty. 13 days to contest left. Edited August 31, 2014 by dawkuk
dawkuk
Lads, one question. What colour should i use for the interiors? Dark Yellow? As for progress: every part is on it's place, so glueing is done. I started putting surfacer, I'll post some pics tomorrow. Cheers.
dawkuk
Right, one week left, gotta pick up the speed on this one. I've finished putting together all the interiors. This is how it looks. Driving wheel etc. Also, the front... ...and the back bumper. That's it. Quad is ready for paint. First, the Surfacer. Engine... Aaaand the bits n' pieces. 7 days left.... dawkuk
Thanks, Phil. Some more progress over the weekend. There it is: I painted interiors with Dark Yellow Colour. Then i did a little drybrushing. After that i put the wash. I didn't clean the excess of it, so the effect is a little strong. The idea behind it was that once i'll close the box, the interior will hardly be seen. If i'd leave the weathering subtle, it wouldn't be visible at all. Next thing: engine. It's pretty much the same as interior. Engine will be seen only from underneath and that bottom part will be covered with dirt, mud, sand etc. I painted it Gun Black, then i put orange rust pigment and a wash. Engine on it's place. Little build up. Have a look inside. Only seats left. Getting close. OK, time for some paint. This is a Tamiya tape. Yes, this is preshading The underneath parts will be weathered a lot, so i painted it black first. And preshading on the outside. And on the back. I always have problems with Flat Black Pactra paint. It likes to make my airbrush splash. I have no problems with other Pactra paints, but black is... just a pain in... Never mind. Plan for the rest of the day: Seats. Tomorrow i'll start painting it Dark Yellow / Dark Green Mickey Mouse scheme. Enjoy. Dawid.

foxy
Nice going, you going to detail inside or just outer parts. Looking good what ever you decide, with time being what it is. Foxy
dawkuk
On this one i'll focus on the outside. Insides will be kept to a mimimum. But i like this truck, and i'll build another one. This time with limber and 25pdr. That one will be a proper build with all the details inside.

dawkuk
Hello. Looks like we're getting somewhere: Spent several hours masking the quad. Time for paint. There it is. The other side. Aaaand i removed the tape. 3 days left. Weathering to be done.
dawkuk
Lads, i have a question. I put the MIG pigment on the chasis. I mixed it with 40% alcohol. Ten i put it on a brush and sprayed it on a chasis using airbrush, creating splatters. After 2 hours i put on acrylic varnish, but the pigment still comes off quite easily. I do not have pigment fixer. I have to find another way. Will clear alcohol do the trick and seal the pigment to the surface?
IanC
That's great! I always spurned that kit because it seemed boring, but I'm going to look out for one now. All those edges are crying out for a bit of old fashioned dry-brushing! As for the pigments - I had the same problem. I'm using them less and less now and going back to washes of humbrol paint. You can get a good dirt splatter effect if you flick neat paint off the edge of a piece of card onto the model.
dawkuk
Thanks, Ian. Do not hesitate to do this kit. It is great. I did some more. The contest was on this weekend, and i didn't make it. Oh, well. There will be others. Some progress: I assembled the engine to the chassis and did decals. also the seats went on their place... And decals on the side. Decals on the back. I put the pigment on chasis to represent dry mud and dust. I'll do that in two phases to accumulate it. Next thing was the washes. I also started with streaking effect. Aand i did the blending with oil paints. The effect is subtle. That is it for now. It's time for vacation. dawkuk
One more update before i go. I did all the streaking grime. There will be a few more rusty streaks. Just two or three. On the dark green door i tried to do a rainmarks. Looks fine. This is how it looks. The back... Aaaand the other side with the chippings etc. I really like the front of the truck. Here you can see the accumulated dust and dry mood over the tire. Aaaand one more look at the back. That's it. I'm of for a week and a half. Enjoy. Dawid.
