Canadian Lancaster - engine trouble

On a flight this morning the Canadian Lancaster 'Vera' suffered engine trouble.

A quote from their Facebook page:

During a local flight from Durham Tees Valley Airport this morning, our Lancaster performed a precautionary engine shutdown . The aircraft landed safely without incident. It is now hangared and is undergoing maintenance. Regrettably we will not attend our weekend events and will advise on others.

Looks like she'll miss Shoreham this weekend.

And their Twitter feed:

From the above sites it appears there was a failure of engine no 4 - smoke was seen trailing from the engine on landing.

Glad all are safe.

Phew!! I did wonder if this might happen. She has been getting a fair amount of flying hours and lots of wear on those lovely Merlins. Rather her get better than .......

Did she manage to get back to Coningsby?

No, shes at Durham Tees Valley Airport. I would assume the BBMF crew will be over asap to get her sorted.

Fingers crossed it's nothing to major and I'm really hoping all is good for Duxford on the 14th :(

Bugger, I was looking forward to Shoreham this weekend!

Maybe Bournemouth on Sunday to see the Vixen :hmmm:

Never been to the Bournemouth show before, anyone know the best place to go for photography?

I'm told by a chap at work who goes to Bournemouth and says either the beach or from the clifftops nearby for photos. But its into sun!

It's nothing to fret over, just think of the amount of time the BBMF Lanc has been a no-show due to an engine playing up. It's been very pain free till now (thank god this problem didn't happen over the Atlantic!), hopefully it'll be flying soon :S

From Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum facebook page

Lancaster update - After assessing the situation, and with consideration to safety and time constraints due to our many commitments during the tour, we have decided to proceed with replacing our #4 engine with a fresh one. Work will begin in the morning at Durham Tees Valley Airport. Our intention is to meet our obligations for the event with the 3 Lancasters at East Kirkby on Tuesday. We will advise with updates. Also, thank you for your many messages of support!

In WW2 an engine change on a Lanc was done in just over 7hrs.

An warbird engine change over a weekend in peacetime is still going to be a good achievement. Hope all goes smoothly!

I've booked a BBMF hangar tour for next Monday - I wonder if "Vera" will be there?

Hi,

I don't have the link, but just read a newspaper article stating the canadian lanc will not be at the centre on Monday or Tuesday. Probably best to keep tabs on the news and check directly with the visitor centre.

Not the news you wanted to hear, but I booked the hanger tour a couple of weeks back and wished I never bothered. I was barricaded in a room waiting nearly half hour for the tour to start, and missed viewing the end of the first flight of the two lancasters. When the tour started was not much better, restricted to a narrow walkway on the side of the hanger. I could not see what the guide was talking about as I was near the end of the group, and with the activity at the time I could not hear him. I walked out and abandoned the tour.

Personally I would avoid the hanger tours for the canadian lancaster, and view it at other events. If you can figure out when the lancasters will be flying at connigsby, just turn up there and view the hanger outside the fence, its only about six feet further back, there is a free car park just opposite.

Do the hanger tour some other time in the future.

Where on earth did they just find a spare Merlin ?

Or are they being lent one by BBMF ? I guess they must have spares, but are Merlin marks interchangeable ?

Fascinated by how the logistics on this have worked.

Pretty sure BBMF have spares. In any event, Just Jane has 4 overhauled zero timed 266s in readiness for her return to flight.

At least it happened now here in Blighty where the entire world's Avro Lancaster expertise is currently gathered and not over the Atlantic on its way home.

A sad sight but a great photo (if you get my drift?)

That photo reminds me of the Airfix box art for G for George. The one with the control caravan and a chap rushing out a Roy Cross one I thinka and re done a s a digitised image for the last release of the Mark 2 tooling kit. (No the the Mk.II radial Lanc, the Airfix tooling from the 70s. Its my own interpretation of the various kit toolings!)

Yes, I know the one you mean, flames leaping from the engine.

I did read a comment in one of the links at top ofthis thread that the CWh guys came prepared for such an eventuality. So, its possible an engine was brought over or they prearranged any problems that might arise with the RAF.

I looked after BBMF stores a couple of years ago, and there were at least half a dozen boxed up ex-Shack Merlins as well as other spare engines up on the flight itself,.

Oddest event I had was unwrapping a set of bearings on 16Oct12 to find that they had been packed on 16Oct46 !!!

Erm, didn't the Shacks have Griffons?
