Boeing C-97A-BO Stratofreighter. 1/72nd.

Recommended Posts

Hi all.
Here are some photo's of my latest build. The kit used was the Academy C-97A which needed a small amount of converting, but nothing too major. The C-97A-BO was basically a VIP transport used for flying the 'Top brass' to various places around the globe, the interior being fitted out to executive aircraft standards, although the rear section still kept it's freight capabilities. I had to blank off the two rear windows either side and then cut two new ones of a slightly larger, and more rectangular. I then scribed a new door on the port side, forward of the new rear window. There were 23 of these built in total, and all had varying configurations.
I based this build on a photo of this aircraft when it was on a visit to West Malling airfield in 1964 when it was occupied by the US Navy as part of Fasron 200. (Google it if you want to find out more). There are two photo's of this aircraft at the end, one of a side view, and the other a close up to show the highly polished finish, which was all done by hand of course!
Can I ask politely that you do not copy these photo's as they are on lone to me by a friend, and I do not think he would be all that pleased to know that they had been copied.

Hope you like the build. (My mistake!! The real aircraft is in the middle)

How stupid am I!! Thank you to all those who pointed out my error in the thread. Why on earth did I put C-47! Too much inhalation of polystyrene glue perhaps!!

Amazing sharp work! Everything are great! But the NMF parts should be much great with the Alclad paints (more shiny as the real pictures shows). Well done!

Hi. Thank you for your suggestion of Alclad, which I did think about using, but using lacquers would just do me in, and that is using a spray booth and wearing a mask!! I have problems using rattle cans, so, unfortunately, lacquers are a no-no for me!!

Really good to see one of these old beauties completed and to such a high standard, has to be well worth the time and effort.

Have two of these on the shelf of shame, I am inspired again!
