Can you use tyre inflaters like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/400329754189?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=t&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108

As a compressor to run an airbrush on, and if so what would happen?

Only asking this as because I am a cheapskate, I don't want to spend too much money to move off brush painting.

Thanks

keep the compressor for inflating the tyre - use the spare tyre as your air source, connect your airbrush to the valve via a tyre-valve connector, Badger make one. Cheap it certainly is! ...... but not brilliant for spraying for more than a few minutes before the pressure drops! TBH I preferred cans....

You *could* use it direct but for satisfactory use you really need a reservoir (to smooth out the impulses), a pressure regulator (so you can control it) and a water separator. By the time you have plumbed all that lot together it would probably be easier to get something designed for the purpose.

If you have room for a REALLY BIG wheel and tyre in your work room then that would be OK - something off a scrapped van or big 4x4 would probably be the most volume of air per £ spent - as the greater the volume of air space the longer it will last when used to power your airbrush, and the more gradual the pressure drop.

I join the fellow modellers who replied in saying this is not a good idea, there are too many problems with such a compressor.

Personally I'd just keep saving until you can buy a proper hobby compressor, most other solutions ends up being a waste of money. Even air cans, while useful to start using an airbrush, suffer from several issues and are not cheap in the longer term.

I tried the tyre solution many, many moons ago, don't bother with it.

I did too. Not worth the bother. A tyre inflator pump doesn't have the guts to give decent airflow. For a cheap compressor try a Boots or Babyliss home tanning kit. You can pick up the compressors for £5 to £15. I've been using one for about 7 years now.

I tried the spare tyre method but only for use when cleaning the airbrush, as the pressure dropped too quickly for any sustained airbrush session of more than 6-7 mins, so resorted to cans of air whilst saving up for a compressor. I would recommend cans of air only for a short time as by the time you have used 7+ cans of air then you are in the cost territory of a cheap compressor.

You could write a letter to santa asking for a compressor!
