Haizerado class Astro Battleship "Shangri La"

Recommended Posts

After 2 months, the Astro Battleship “Shangri La” is now finished. The kit went together well and Bandai make it easy to do lighting. However, due some problem somewhere along the line, the bridge window light and a couple of the Nav light LED’s having either blown or just stopped working. A disappointment for sure, but I’ll live with it. The main thing is the central lights still work and change colour like they’re supposed to.

I have painted mine slightly differently than what’s on the screen by adding replaced panels which in my opinion makes it more interesting than just a slab of violet hued gray. Speaking of which, I opted not to have the violet tinge to it because I didn’t like it that much

That’s the best thing about Sci-Fi, you can do what you like with the subject and no one can tell you it’s wrong :fight:

Here’s some pics I’ve taken of it. I might try for some moodier shots later tonight if I can be bothered.

Thanks to all those who tuned into and posted in the WIP – it is always hugely appreciated

Let me know what you think - good or bad, it’s all feedback that may help me do something better in the future

Cheers

Si,

That is awesome and time well spent, particularly adding all that extra minute detail.

Shame about the lighting, though I have to say what is working looks great!

Having got a couple of the Bamdia kits I have to agree on the quality, buildability and easy of lighting.

Cheers,

Warren

Absolutely superb! It's an unusual colour choice, but it works perfectly. Don't lose sleep over the bridge lighting- why would a bridge be lit anyway? Real ships don't, you mute the mfds down to a minimum so you can see other ships, nav lights and lighthouses. Stands to reason a warship wouldn't keep the lights up unnecessarily?

I think it's great, the tiny pinpricks of light give a great sense of scale, and the evenly-illuminated targetting thingies are really nice as well.

It's a lovely companion for the battle carrier, your fleet is becoming quite a force to be reckoned with.

Don't forget to post some pics of the little fighter as well :)

Thanks very much fellas, greatly appreciated :)

I'll try to take a photo of all 3 of the together lit up as well at some point. I'm also going to try and adjust the colour of a core of the nav lights by putting a dot of clear blue or some other clear colour over the tip of the fibre . Too much green for my liking now that. Look at it.

thanks Jorgen - coming from a paint master such as yorself is quite, that is very much a compliment

Scooty - thanks ot you as well. When I first did the red Carrier, I didn't know anything about the show either, but I have found myself emersed in it thanks to Misrule and all of his info

I even went and bought the live action version of SBY - well worth it. Now waiting for the anime movie to come out in December with these ships in it - including new paint jobs :D

once you get a taste for it - it sucks you right in!

Thanks bud. The next 2199 ship won't be for a little while as I really want to finish the BR52 but when I do, I think it'll be the Balgray as I don't have enough spare cash yet to buy the Dreadnought. Maybe one day i will :)

I've been looking at the core ship too and thinking up ways to effectively light it. After the incident with is one and the malfunctioning lights, I'm a bit apprehensive about doing it again but I will coz I'm a sucker like that.

I must say, the finished product is amazing! Having a contrast with different shades of grey really highlights some areas, and the choice of green goes better than I expected it too. Terrific work here Madhatter :goodjob:

I had the house pretty much to myself tonight, so whilst the wife was away and the boy tucked safely in bed, I decided to have a play with the camera and lighting on the battleship

The below pics are the ones I felt looked cool:

Well, that's enough of the pics but this was more an exercise in learning and practicing photography skills. Once I figure out PhotoShop Elements Ii should be able to try and create some kind of planet mural type picture.

Anyway, thanks for entertaining me by stopping in again

Till then

I like that a lot, creates an excellent atmosphere. The pics where it appears to be emerging from the gloom are particularly effective.

You definitely need a couple of fleet shots with the other warship :) these shots make the model look much bigger than it is, it could easily pass for studio scale.

thanks guys

I'll try and have a play with with the contrast settings as well to black out the back ground even more and then drop in a planet picture in the right place over the top to give them a light source. Fingers crossed it works OK.

my goodness! Why on Earth would I mind your daughter doing that?! That's fantastic!! Please thank her very, very much for me.

Would love to know how she did it, but I will learn with the same vigour and speed that I do my builds... ;)
