Young Miniatures 1/10 British Infantryman 1916

Recommended Posts

My aircraft builds of recent times, for various reasons have ended up, unfinished, on the shelf. :badmood:

So I decided to tackle something completely different. I bought this resin bust on impulse some time ago and have decided to

have a crack at it. I have been spurred on by the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1.

Really it is just a paint job as there are only six pieces in the 'kit'.

Here is the box

There are no instructions. I suppose if you can't work out how six big bits of resin go together then you would be better off with some Playdoh.

Anyway, here are the parts. I have cleaned them up and removed some (sizeable) casting blocks.

I must say the sculpting is absolutely first class. The detail is amazing and has been cast from the master

using superb quality resin. No pin holes or blemishes of any kind.

Here I have just blue tacked everything together to get a feel for the bust on it's base (bought specially for it at Telford last year).

I'll prime everything tomorrow and get started. Wish me luck and thanks for looking in....

I decided to start with the base and then the peripheral bits like the shovel and the gun.

I cut out a piece of plastic sheet and then glued the kit stand column to it using 2 part epoxy. Then I anchored it further with milliput and continued building up around it with milliput

until the plastic was covered. I then worked into the milliput to create some 'vegetation'. I fashioned some barbed wire from lead wire and while the milliput was still soft pushed the

barbed wire into it to create a sort of subtle frame and ended up with this...

I then painted the vegetation using washesand dry brushing. I sculpted a poppy from milliput and once painted added it to the front of the base. The column was painted using Metalcote gunmetal to match the colour of the barbed wire.... I tried the whole thing on the wooden baseas so..

Next I tackled the Lee Enfield rifle. Once primed. I brushed on a mixture of Naples Yellow and Burnt Sienna artist's acrylic to the wooden parts and then dry brushed some burnt umber for grain.

I then gave it a coat of Tamiya Clear Orange followed, when dry by a thin wash of Burnt Umber and Paynes's Grey. I cut it back slightly with Micromesh to take of most of the gloss. The metal parts were painted with Metalcote Gunmetal and buffed with some ragged cotton buds. Here is the result...

Next came the Brodie Helmet. Once primed it was painted with Metalcote Polished Steel to which I had added a little Revell Rust. I polished this then used the salt method

to achieve some subtle chipping. I airbrushed Valejo green and once dry, swept away the salt and was left with this...

Then it was the turn of the shovel. After priming it was painted with Metalcote and polished. I then scraped various earth coloured pastels with a scalpel to make a powder that I was careful not

to mix it. I painted some thinners onto the shovel where I wanted the dried on 'soil' and sprinkled on the powder. Once dry I sealed the 'soil' with Matt Cote. Here is the result...

You know what? I am absolutely loving this. I will definately be doing more of these. Shame they are so expensive.

Oh well. Just the small matter of the figure left do do! :frantic:

Thanks for looking

You're doing great so far! I'm taking a seat and watching :speak_cool:

I do have a YOUNG Miniatures bust in my stash; I agree they are expensive, but from what I can see till now, worth every penny of it

Ciao

Just stumbled across this thread.

I suppose there's a chance that more people will see your work (Which is brilliant) in the GB.

I'm planning on doing a "Tommy's War" figure for the WW1 GB which is way out of my comfort zone....

Nobody? Then I feel vindicated.

Sorry Andy. Missed your post. From what I gather the GBs are just a nice way to come together and do something a bit more communal. Building models along a predefined theme in the virtual company of others. You enter a model within the theme, make a build thread showing the major stages of construction as you've done here and then when it's done add it to the G B gallery.

I think. I must admit that I'm very new to the forum and don't fully understand them myself but I've really enjoyed the one I've completed and I've just started a 1/72 Whippet Tank for the WW1 GB (which is dissappointingly under subscribed) which can be found here.
