HMS Plymouth off to the scrap yard

Recommended Posts

What is also sad is that we no longer have any breakers in the UK, we have to send our scrap off around the globe now before it can be turned into razor blades!

HMS Intrepid was scrapped in Liverpool in 2008. Sad.

Its all to do with costs.

If you look at the conditions in Turkey / Bangladesh etc where they scrap these ships they are abysmal.

Workers die, get contaminated with fuel, asbestos etc. The govt should really stop Naval ships going to these plces but they are just after as much £££ as they can get.

With Plymouth who is / was the owner?

The Turkish yards the UK Govt sends it's ships to is actually pretty well run - the environmentally responsible recycling is one of the conditions. There are UK facilities - Abel in Hartlepool, who scrapped the Clemenceau - but the best tender price usually wins.

As to who owns Plymouth, I beleive Peel Ports became legally responsible when her previous owners went into liquidation.

The sad thing is that just across the river is Cammel Lairds who built the type (but not Plymouth). It would have been nice if she could have been used as an apprentice training aid and then donated?

An update last night from HMS Plymouth Trust Facebook page. Seems like they think its not yet over.

UPDATE FROM HMS PLYMOUTH TRUST LIMITED:
Dear Members and Supporters..
Many of you are asking about what is currently happening and what we can expect to happen regarding HMS Plymouth which was taken from us this morning by Peel Ports.
As you are all no doubt aware, we are using the services of a Maritime Barrister from Ashfords of Plymouth in our campaign to save HMS Plymouth. He gave us the instruction of needing to raise £5k in order to persuit the avenue further of having HMS Plymouth arrested. Down to the goodwill of mostly our members and supporters we undertook this task and succeeded in around 18 hours - a fantastic result made possible by true "people power" to which did the cause proud.
After Peel confirmed to the to the press that HMS Plymouth would leave toward the end of August, following our successful fundraiser they then rushed the job forward and had HMS Plymouth taken away ASAP before the warrant could be issued and potentially see her kept at Birkenhead.
She is now out at sea under tow. We wish to reassure our members that the battle continues and the Trust's legal representative is not worried about the current situation. This may well raise the eyebrows of people wondering as to why but the answer is very simple..
This gentleman is a highly qualified professional at a very high profile and reputable specialist law firm. He has taken on the case and is working on it in that same capacity - something he would not do if he did not believe in. Put simply, this is not in anyway over and the reason for this is that we have a good case.
We want to assure our members, supporters and those who donated to make our case possible that it is being handled by a professional now and we must allow him to do his job. We appreciate that many people will have no finger nails left at this point and the same very much goes for us but we really have to stress that this needs to be left well alone now until we can give you an update from the Barrister. As soon as we have something to tell you, we will tell you and that is our promise to you all.
Please be aware, any attempts from other people to contact certain tug companies, ringing certain law firms continually etc will only hamper progress. So anybody who feels the need to do this - be clear, you are only being detrimental to the current plans of action.
We hope to update you soon with news from the Maritime Barrister. Please keep checking the page for regular updates.
Best Regards,
HMS Plymouth Trust Limited.

If I had one wish it would be to force the company at Birkenhead to scrub her fwd cable locker out with a tooth brush and a bottle of pussers blue on their hands and knees in a force 9 with someone eating potmess in front of them. Sneaky devils

So who pays for all the fuel and time that this backwards and forwardsness?

I know I shouldnt get political but it's really about time Dave did one.

Anyway back on topic, this does make me sad. I was / am an honorary crew member of HMS Plymouth and HMS Beaver (also no longer with us)....

If there was a slight chance of saving her, would there be a better place for her to be located? perhaps at Chatham at the historic dockyard with HMS Cavalier, or at the museum in Portsmouth, or somewhere on the Thames in central London. Birkenhead's a characterful setting, but is hardly in a location to attract the crowds that are needed to raise enough money to keep her alive.

Across the Mersey May be better. Albert Dock would be ideal.

There is already a possibility of HMS Whimbel and HMS Zenith coming here too.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well poor old Plymouth has gone.....and LCT7074 may soon be following - also the Bronnington is now listing badly ... :weep:

Peel Holdings seem to be the villians of the piece, as they also own the Manchester Docks - I would fancy a ships chances at IWM North... :angrysoapbox.sml:
