nurglespuss
Hi guys! Well, this is my second Trumpeter kit (and my 5th historical kit ). It was fiddly to make, but enjoyable! The tracks were ridiculously loose! Even if it is Very saggy! I've given it a severe start to its weathering (after painting, decals etc.) This is my first time going heavy with MiG powders! All the dark brown stuff was mixed with paint, but this dust was applied by Microset. I want to set it without losing too much of the dust if possible? I've been reading up on methods, I tried Testors dullcoat, but that killed it and I had to redo it (the dust was applied with water that time). I have heard some good things about hairspray? None of my local places seemed to know what I was on about with wanting to set powders (This will be on a base for gaming). I have also heard mention of whitespirit? I can get this no problem, but, how do I apply it? Cheers! (I dont have an airbrush) ... Edit ... Darn, varnish removed the effect, and flashed white while drying, hmmm, will see if I can save it... nurglespuss
Sorry for the poor photo! the dust didnt work out with any kind of protective spray... so gave up and went back to usual brush methods. Rusty rather than dusty, but I think it looks real. Bit more work to do, basing, mud on lower tracks and maybe some aerials.
nurglespuss
OK another update, bit more fiddling with the dirty beast, and working on the base, just waiting for things to dry now so I can finish it off.
Sgt.Squarehead
Great result with the mud, but those tracks are way too long, they'd be off in a jiffy! Best plan is to trim them neatly to length and go for a butt-join under one of the roadwheels. You can then tidy up the off-cuts and use them as improvised armour on the superstructure. I really like the Trumpeter StuGs, I've got an Ausf B, an Ausf C and two Ausf E's to do.....There are some issues with the kits, but if you buy a spread of them you can build some very accurate little models: http://www.onthewaymodels.com/reviews/Trumpeter/Elwin_Bugler_StugIIIC.htm
nurglespuss
Nice one! thanks for the cool info! I won't be able to trim the tracks now as its stuck to the base, but on the next one I will! I'm definitely going to pick up another few Trumpeter kits, they are fairly quick to build, and nice to paint! Cheers!
Sgt.Squarehead
Avoid their M4 (their other Shermans are OK) and Dicker Max kits.....The early boxing of their 1/72 FAMO has indy-links (yes I do mean indy-links not L&L) so be prepared for some serious graft if you get one. If you are OK with (only slightly) postwar stuff I'd recommend having a look at their 1/72 JS-3 kits, they are very well done and they come with one of the best sets of QB running gear I've seen and also a full set of L&L tracks and running gear: http://www.onthewaymodels.com/reviews/Trumpeter/IS3prev.htm
badger
Hi Sarge, Not meaning to thread hijack but what are the problems with the dicker max? I was planning on picking one up the next time I see one as it'll go nicely with my sturer emil Kind regards Ben
Sgt.Squarehead
It's missing the dummy driver position and they have royally messed up the roadwheel bogies.....It came up quite recently on ML Braille: http://www.network54.com/Forum/47210/message/1408392083/Dicker+Max+in+Styrene- It's all sortable by the look of things (if you have a spare Pz.IV) but it's a bit of a pain. badger
Hi Sarge, Cheers for that - you're quite right -looks a pain to fix!! If I could find one cheap it'd be worth doing but not at the full price! Ben
Sgt.Squarehead
Euromodels did a very fine resin Dicker Max: http://henk.fox3000.com/tankmodels.htm You might be able to track one down. NOTE - It appears that Tank Models now have the Euromedels kits, but be warned that Tank Models have accquired something of a reputation for not coming up with the goods, so if you do order, pay with with PayPal if possible: http://www.network54.com/Forum/47210/message/1381244475/Tank+Models+-+Warning!
