Tim Moff
I am a relatively newcomer, 2nd GB (just did the Harrier) after a long break....not a super detail guy, built for the boys ceilings, mostly out of the box for fun! I am using the Academy 1/48 F86F-30 Sabre with 6-3 wings, causing issues as most decals have the 'other' wing.....
Mozzy19
Welcome along Tim. I responded to a few of your questions in chat, but you're pretty much ok to do any RAF Sabre with the 6-3 wings as most were fitted during service. Sean
Tim Moff
Well, Got to start tonight, not sure which decals from a group, like the 4 Sqn but need to match the green decals with a paint (for the nose - any ideas Humbrol etc be appreciated!) or the Sharks mouth 112 Sqn (but this may be the OOB Airfix I will do if time allows). Primed all the inside, cockpit, pilots etc for sprue/hand painting. Will be built OOB in-flight (for my boys' games room). Also got the wings fuel tank holes drilled and wings joined using liquid poly and clamps. Hopefully get stuck into the 1950's pilot tomorrow after Laser Quest (with my 10 year old!) Not an expert or rivet counter, so don't be too harsh - done for fun and the hanging in the bedroom ceiling!!
Mozzy19
Nice start Tim. Have you looked at Humbrol Emerald green? http://www.modelhobbies.co.uk/shop/humbrol-14ml-gloss-emerald-enamel-paint-p-1783.html It looks quite close to your pictures when it was used here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234938342-airfix-vampire-t22-admirals-barge/ Sean
Tim Moff
Cheers Sean, looks about right! Will look at getting a tin and testing against the decals and see! Thanks
Tim Moff
This STGB seems very quiet!!! Anyways, got some more on-sprue painting done on the wet bank holiday!! All the info pointed at a black cockpit and interior rather than grey.....hopefully get some more done soon....not quite sure why I painted the engine parts!! Bit of dry brushing, just need to add a bit of colour!! Not a Super detail guy so will do the best I can - it will be wheels up hanging from the ceiling anyways!! Hopefully get the pilot painted and pit done, fuselage closed up soon!!
Tim Moff
Well managed to get on, get the cockpit sorted and join close the fuselage: Got rid of the standard seem down the Canopy, just needs dipping in Klear and masking now: All joined up, gave the cockpit a wash with florys 'dark dirt' later so it isn't too brand new!! Joined the fuel tanks and put on a bit of putty across the seems....using tamiya tape now as i learned that putting putty everywhere and then sanding off panel lines is not good!! All ready for the big join!: And a picture of the big and lil Sabre....how cute!! Well hopefully get most of the build done before my return to work Monday...even the primer on hopefully (in-between 2 x boys and 'Summer Holiday fun'! Hope all your builds are going well! Mozzy19
Nice work Tim. I've found that if you fit and align the insert that goes behind the wing on the underside of the fuselage before fitting the wings, you get a much better seam that's easier to clean up. That was the only place where I had issues on my other build. Sean

Tim Moff
Managed to start closing the holes, well the undercarriage is not designed to be in the raised position, so some filling and tidying needed there!! Got the nose cone on, canopy and Windshield prepared and masked. Gun doors on - a bit too much of a gap, going to be hard to fill and leave the correct gap, may just leave, will look after it primed Canopy duly masked! All Ready to go - however had a minor disaster, the Pitot snapped whilst it was being rotated - used some superglue (if you look closely!) not sure how long it will hold...I know, should have gone on last! Fuel Tanks seam sanded and re-scribed (by re-scribed I mean line cut into putty with no 9 blade - really must learn about re-scribing!! May need to add a bit more putty and sand around the nose areas of the tanks. Apologies, out of focus, but big and lil brother together..... now gotta pick up my new Halford primers (grey and white) tomorrow...was planning to prime in white as I will be using Dark Sea grey as part of the camo....have always primed in grey - any thoughts/opinions? Hope all your builds are going well! Edited August 28, 2014 by Tim Moff
Cookenbacher
Looking great Tim. Learning to scribe is high up on my list too.
Tim Moff
Well got cracking on both Sabres, Wings on, most of the closed panels on etc!! Seam area masked up ready for putty and re-scribe by knife!! Some gaps around undercarriage doors More seam areas masked up Lil and Big Sabre!! Next then, putty and sanding the seams and cut in some lines, then hopefully get some primer on over the weekend when work beckons on Monday - subject to the Long Haired General and kiddies!! Enjoy the weekend! Tim

And lil and big Sabre! will hand paint/pre-shade the panel lines (normally use the airbrush but a bit hard with 1/72!) May even get the DSG on before the weekend is out!! Mozzy19
Tim, for RAF Sabres the panel directly in front of the tail should be flush, not raised as it is on American made Sabres. Looking good though. Sean
Tim Moff
Hi Sean, Thanks......I think it is flush.....can you look further up the thread? Or what do I have to do to correct it? Tim
Mozzy19
My mistake. Usually when building this out of the box, that part is raised up. Sean

Tim Moff
Pre-shaing done - not everyones cup of tea I know, but I recently saw a 1/72 harrier in the same scheme and it added a bit of tone, especially to the DSG. Will have to mask up the bottom, nose area for the emerald green, the anti glare area an d see what I can get done! Both together! Happy modelling!
