1/24 Airfix Typhoon (yeah I know). No update - waiting for a new engine!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I know I know another Airfix Typhoon. I seem to have lost my way with my Eduard Spitfire build and I want something new to occupy me over the up coming months (The Spitfire has been packed away nice n safe and she will get finished).

OK First up I needed to clear some space in my work shop.

Before...

And after..

I doesn't look it but I've managed to clear quite a lot of stuff out of the way  (18 kits are now safely in the attic).

I intend this buils to be my one big one for the year so it wont be quick but I'll post updates as I go along. I intend it to be pretty much OOB however if I think stuff can be added or that some after market would benefit the build I will add it.

Have a great weekend

Yours aye

Nice cave Iain.

I'm not working on my Mk.IX at the moment due to waiting for a replacement part from Eduard. I shall look forward to you returning to yours at some point - hopefully I shall be back working on mine fairly soon.

I shall follow your Typhoon build with interest.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hey Stix

Cheers mate. I dunno whats going on with me and my Spitfire but I just don't have any enthusiasm for it :( . What part are you waiting for?

How is the canopy on your Typhoon?

I've been hearing reports the quality of the glazing is pretty appalling from the majority of people who have purchased this kit.

Hi Sidders

In a word rubbish! The windscreen has 2 vertical lines down it and the canopy has a bulge in it. I understand that these issues have been rectified by Airfix and I'll be in touch in due course!

Hi Iain,

One of the exhausts was moulded incorrectly. I contacted Eduard who then discovered that all the spares they have in stock are also faulty - so they're kindly going to send me some resin replacements. Apparently it will take awhile to correct the original moulds.

There's a photo of the fault on my D-Day build thread of the Mk.IX.

Kind regards,

Stix

Evening ladies and gents

I finally have some progress pictures for you. I haven't used the call outs from the Airfix instruction manual instead I've used lots of photos from the internet and photos that I took at Duxford a couple of months ago.....

I primed it using Halfords grey primer, gave it a coat of NATO black as a base coat then sprayed Gunmetal in thin coats followed by a thin coat of mithril silver sealed with Klear and washed in Windsor and Newton lamp black and burnt umber followed by a dry brushing of mitheril silver to draw out the detail! Phew!

Lovely!! Engine or put next?

Odd.

Hey Odd

I'm going to pretty much follow the distructions and I think its continue with the cockpit area - however I'll come to a stop at the end of the week as I've pre ordered the Airscale instruments and placards and they aren't released until the 6th. I've spent a little time in the workshop this morning done some more weathering to the tubing, I'll post some pictures later.

Great start on this kit. Its engineering is quite good. I like your treatment of the cockpit frame. As Tim mentioned there are a few debates about the interior colors. Chris Thomas came on my build and posted the following:

Airfix never actually consulted me on the internal colours; having had good access to Hendon's I guess they decided to go with that. Much will be correct but I recently came across proof that (as I suspected) MN235 had been badly restored, notably in the cockpit area where everything is black. Someone sent me colour shots taken at Wright Field's postwar display and in the background of shots of their Ju88 was MN235's fuselage with side panels removed. This clearly showed that the tubing (now black) was silver. Other sources confirm the black extended (on the walls) down to the tubing level and below that was interior green.

I am just guesstimating interior colors as I go, supremely confident that whichever path I take will be incorrect as to someone's opinion. I have modified my original thoughts as to the interior colors to be more in line with Mr. Thomas' post above though.

I am looking forward to more of your updates. And, I like your modeling area, it is quite nice.

As usual lovely work so far mate, there seems to be quite a debate going on at the moment about interior colours wondered what your take on it is? u going with the box instructions?

regards

Tim

Hey Tim

Cheers mate. When it comes to the cockpit color I'm with Mr Thomas i.e silver frame work, black cockpit sides as far down as the framework and cockpit green below that. I like this combination because a: historically it seems more likely and b: personally I think it adds much more interest to the cockpit area rather than it being like a coal shed, black on black!

Hi George

Mate thanks for the information, I had done some research prior to beginning my build and taken loads of pictures of the cockpit section at the IWM Duxford, which showed all the frame work as unpainted aluminium and black instrument panels and the upper sidewalls in black.

As for the lower portion of the cockpit I was going to take a punt and paint it cockpit green anyway.

Fella keep up the good work with your build....your storming ahead and she is looking might fine! And as for the cockpit colors go with what you know!

OMG there's a helluva lot of wring/pipes to duplicate if you plan to leave the ,cockpit side panels off. Great photos, I'm going to Duxford in September so I'm looking forward to taking some pictures of my own. The last time I saw it,it was in a very dimly lit corner of the hangar and I try to avoid using flash for cockpit photos so it looks like it's been moved to somewhere brighter. Incidentally, the first time I saw that cockpit was at the IWM at Lambeth on a school trip!

Its on the upper level now at Duxford and it is better illuminated and you know what I think that was the first time I saw it too!!
