andy wood
I don't know why, but I am getting a hankering for building British post war armour. I am an aircraft modeller by 'trade' and I can't explain why I have this feeling, but I have. I have already built a 25pdr and purchased an AS90 from Panzer Vor, but the subject is something I know next to 'owt about. To give an example I would like to build a Cheiftan, but I am aware that the Tamiya kit is a mix of marks, and a Saracen (or summit like that) but I wouldn't know where to begin. Can anyone in the know point me on the direction of some good books on British AFVs for this period? Thanks in advance
SleeperService
Well for the Chieftain I'd start with George Forty's Modern Combat Vehicles 1 Chieftain. It's old but gives good coverage. Then there's Military Vehicles fotofax The Chieftain Tank by Simon Dunstan which gets you virtually to the end of it's British Army Service. Look up User Shermaniac and follow his signature link to our Club Site I gave him dozens of pictures of Gulf War stuff and he's uploaded most. Saracen Family is covered in Bill Munro's Alvis Saracen Family (err...obviously) and there are good scale drawings (factory jobs printed at 1/76) in Airfix Magazine Guide 21: Modelling Armoured Cars. You can then modify/correct the Tamiya kits to a satisfactory standard. If you're after a Stolly then Stout, Strong and Sturdy by John L Rue is what you need. If you're doing the black/green scheme then I'd offer the following. The green is pretty consistent as it's applied by sprayers and tends to a low satin finish, I never saw it true matt. The black is applied in a variety of ways and may be nearly flat matt to almost glossy. It's often brushed on so the edges tended to be a solid black with the infill being more variable. I hope you enjoy your change as much as I've being enjoying planes! Anything specific please PM me and I'll help if I can.
