A propsal for the 2015 GB vote

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

I've been having a think and mulled this idea over with the Admin guys and they like the idea, but before doing anything and because I like the GBs to be member led and democratic. I want to canvas your views.

We currently vote for Six GBs per year, each Four months long and only GBs that attract thirty or more interested members are eligible for the vote.

Now what I proposing is that Five of the GB slots are voted for as per last year, but the Sixth slot be ring-fenced for a non aviation subject or subject that could not include aviation.

For example we could have a vote for the sixth slot that would include an armour only GB, a maritime subject, a vehicle subject such as F1, a figure painting GB.

I think you get the drift. This would let one of the other not so popular subjects actually get a dedicated GB.

So your views are sought.

Sounds fair enough to me Mish :)

Sorry Anthony I asked to responses to this proposal not for alternatives. We had all that over that past couple of years and the membership wanted less but longer GBs

I believe we run more GBs than any other modelling site and setting them up, monitoring and hosting them takes a considerable amount of time.

So no change to the number of GBs just the proposed change to ring-fence one of them.

Thumbs up from me. It might even encourage some of us to do non aviation subjects.

May I pitch an idea for the future please? Given that this site has been going a few years some

Group Builds have made a re appearance eg WHIF and the Mustang ones. Could we have a minimum gap of say a couple of years before such a group build is eligible to be voted on for a re occurance? This would allow for a greater divergence of subjects.

As I say this is something to consider at a later date.

Keep up the good work Mish!

Well done Mish

Non aviation GB's always struggle to get enough votes and it will encourage people to diversify there normal model choice and build something different.

Sounds like a plan to me!

Can it be done such that everything gets voted on in the same way, but the sixth slot catches the "niche" GB which gets the most votes but doesn't make it into the overall top five?

So if it turns out that there's a huge surge in popularity of multiple niche options they aren't all competing for one slot.

I don't know if I explained this very well, hopefully you can make sense of it :)

A couple of thoughts/ requests for clarifications:

1) I hope that this "special" slot would still require a minimum number of participants, lest the slot gets reserved but nobody shows up. (and conversely, I like Will's idea in post 14.)

2) I hope that there's enough interest for something more defined than "not aircraft" or even "armour". Otherwise, why not just post on the appropriate WIP/RFI pages?

They have to have 30 people listed to make it into the vote

I see where you are coming from but to be fair how often do the approved GB's have 30 people start and finish models (I am as bad here as not finished one yet)

Also there are a few non aircraft GB proposals that have more than 30 people interested required

I do like the idea behind this quite a lot, but as Bob and Will have mentioned.....well maybe sort of, the selection of the 6th GB could be quite contentious. Does the highest non-military aircraft GB go automatically in as the 6th GB or do we have to have a separate vote for non-military aircraft GB's?

Or another thought, we have three specific GB types, Naval, Armour, Civilian (which should cover the rest) and we rotate these each year, that we can guarantee, say the mud pluggers...opps I mean AFV guys :D can look forward to the their own GB, on a type they have to decide (again by a vote) every three years.

The only worry is that these specialized builds may not get the numbers to make them a truly interesting build...no disrespect to anyone.....but even some of the aircraft builds have been a little light at times.

As I have made known a more than few times.... I'm a bit of a Whiffy fan and would love to see a WhatIf GB as a regular part of the GB calender, even if it's every second or third year. It was the original WhatIf GB the attracted to Britmodeller, and WhatIf II the popped the cherry....so to say for GB's and prompted me to join the fun/anarchy of GB's.

But all said and done I agree with the idea and think it's a god step forward in making it fairer for everyone else beside the Mil aircraft crowd.

Oh and don't forget the Non-Injected GB doesn't have the be military aircraft! :D
