Old Father Elm - ancient treeman

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

After a bit more messing around this morning I finally got this chap finished and managed to take some pictures before the light fell. He's a treeman from the recently-released Games Workshop plastic kit and is about 14cm tall. I'm still quite surprised that it's possible to make something like this in plastic, but they are generally very good at organic stuff.

I converted the model a little using parts from all three versions. I rebuilt a right hand into a left so I didn't have to use the enormous left hand supplied, and used the long plaited beard as a pigtail. I also removed the bottom of his jaw so that the face looks more like a nut and less like a mask from Princess Mononoke. I tidied up the changes with epoxy putty and CA.

He's all brush painted with Citadel paints except for varnish, the tendrils (where I airbrushed the blends) and an initial application of "Flesh Wash" to the recesses, also using the AB for ease of access.

After the basic paint job was done and sealed I weathered him with enamels and a small amount of pigment - mainly AK and MIG stuff. The flat coat is Alclad Klear Flat, and the gold paint is Vallejo Liquid Gold which I haven't used before, and I think is excellent!

I added a layer of moss mixed from ground foam, green paint and leftover "scenic cement" (dilute PVA). A bit scary initially but when toned down with enamels and drybrushed with some ludicrously bright green I think it's pretty effective.

I was amused to discover just how many bottles and jars went into this!

There's a WIP thread here - thanks to everyone who commented while it was going on, and thanks for having a look here too! I really enjoyed this one, sometimes a bit of messy painting is very good for the soul :)

Cheers,

Will

Thanks folks!

I think GW tried hard to make something different from an Ent (since they have a LotR license and I'm pretty sure there are rules about not letting Warhammer overlap that). But I agree, once you go giant walking tree there's going to be a degree of familiarity :)

Thanks Andy. I wasn't mad about the kit either on initial inspection - those faces - but I like all the detail and I thought it had potential.

Personally I'd like something a bit more lumpen, with a less dramatic pose. I suppose there's always Treebeard...

Man, I have to say Will, your paint skills never cease to amaze me! That is utterly brilliant and a really cool subject too

Is there anything you can't do??

Thanks Si, you're much too kind. I like painting figures because it's relaxing, but there are so many people out there better at it than I am. Doesn't stop me trying though :)

And I really struggle with aeroplanes, although I love them. Firstly there's nowhere to hide at all, and secondly you think you're finished and then discover another hundred teeny parts which need to be painted, decalled and attached. It's like wheels on tanks, only far worse - when did you last have to apply four miniscule decals to an idler???

That is one incredibly nice paint job, one can just sit for a long long time and study shades and details, and wonder how that was possible to paint. Wonderful!

I also like the picture with all the products used, gives an indication of the complexity.

absolutely superb painting and basing............bet the kit cost nearly as much as an airfix 1/24 typhoon! I enjoyed painting their stuff but the silly prices meant I reverted to historical figure painting.......definitely cant get away from it being an Ent really!

Thanks for the kind comments! I think it's about 1/3 the price of the big Typhoon in the UK? So definitely expensive but I felt like I got my money's worth. It was one of those things where I was really keen to do the next stage every night.
