Airfix 1/72 Gloster Gladiator, D.H. Tiger Moth and Hawker Hurricane

Recommended Posts

Now Stephen.....it does seem a while since there was an update...

If you're not posting soon you may steal my mantle as the slowest modeller on the net.....LOL!

Given though you are building 3 and I only ever attempt 1 then I should probably pull my head in :analintruder:

Yes I have been a little LAZY. On the 30th August the bottom fell out of our world, our GP rang and told us my son Alex had a suspected Ewings Sarcoma (bone cancer). This was a bit hard to cope with at 0730 on a Sat morning.

After many trips to Brisbane's Wesley and Princess Alexandria Hospitals they have decided he doesn't have cancer, but a golden staff infection in his bone. He has a long way to go to get rid of the infection but he will be OK.

It has been a terrifying month with a good outcome that started with a bleeding nose. The transition from cancer to infection is a long story full of confusion.

As for modelling I have started up again. ,I have rigged the Gladiator almost finished the Hurricane and the Tiger Moth is ready for a flat coat.

Pictures will follow soon.

Looking forward to updates in the future and how you managed the rigging..

Better news about your son and hope everything works out.

As a father whose daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago i share

your worry.

Thanks to some fantastic treatment from our NHS my daughter is fine.

But the sense of not being able to fix it yourself is a parents nightmare.

I'll definitely pull my head in.

Truly hope your son is okay and I'm very glad he has moved from the first diagnosis through to hopefully a great recovery overall.

Family means a lot to me too.....to all of us obviously

Take care all the best

Alex will be fine, it will take about 12 months. They drilled 6 holes in his knee to get enough material for a biopsy which means he has now had a fractured bone.

Cancer is a scary word.

We have Medicare in this country, it is brilliant. We have only paid about $500 for Alex's treatment, that included 2 visits to a top specialist 3 MRIs a CT scan a PET scan a biopsy and countless visits to doctors.

It is overcast here today no pictures of the Sun, so a day of modelling and washing etc.

Some Sun pictures here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/stephencamptonjones/sets/72157648195987045/

Thanks for caring.

  • 1 month later...

After the ups and downs of the last few months I finally finished a model. Not overly happy with it, a few bent wires, a short wire and the cowling was a nightmare. I did break the bottom of the cowling when I removed it from the sprue which would have caused some fit issues.

The next time I rig a biplane I will drill some locating holes for the wires, this will help to keep the glue stains down a bit and the wire will end up in the right place, mmmm.

Aifix has added some locating holes.

Looking at the pictures here I could have added a little more exposure, next time.

Not as good as dr_gn's Gladiator.

The Hurricane is next.

Thanks for looking.

Finally got off my buttocks and finished a model.

It is amazing how a photograph can show up all the flaws in the model, bad painting things not straight, etc.

I was hoping to have the canopy opened, but Airfix give you two choices closed or sitting in the wrong place on top of the fuselage.

I made a ring and bead gun sight from wire, the ring looks like the pilot can put his head through it... next time it will be better.

Wow Stephen!

Super progress.

Love the Silver Gladiator (always been a sucker for that aircraft and you've rigged her too!)

And the livery on the Hurri and the two bladed prop look smashing ...well done.

Gotta love Toyworld....gives Dads that excuse to "pick up a little something" when sorting out toys or presents for the kids  ......I LOVE IT! :analintruder:

Now where's that Tiger Moth hiding???

Well done mate......there's some mojo back I reckon!

Cheers

The next projects in this WIP are 2 more Hurricanes. One is a 2 blade Mk I and the other 3 blade Mk I.

Here are some box pictures.

Some PE trouble.

Already there is a problem, the green on the cockpit side walls (parts 19 and 20) doesn't match any interior colour paint I have. Anybody have any ideas as to what will match this paint?

Thanks for looking.

Hi Stephen, goodness, it has been too long since I checked in on this post! Glad the dust has settled on your medical panic- hopefully you can now anticipate a truly happy new year. Nice job on the Hurri, and even more so the Gladiator. While 1/48 is my supposed scale of choice, the little Airfix is one I just had to see for myself, especially after seeing a couple of builds here. AND I managed to acquire a 1/32 Silver Wings Sea Gladiator (I'm not choosy!) which was pleasantly large when I first got to ogle it. I rather like the type, it seems.

bob

p.s. You've shown why I don't much like the Eduard pre-painted stuff- they use some rather fanciful colours, and then you're left to try to integrate them.
