United States Marine Corps M4A3 on Iwo Jima

Recommended Posts

Thank you gentlemen, your comments are always appreciated.

Dennis, the use of armor in the Pacific is one of the least known much less documented, facets of that war. Each island campaign saw more modifications added to the tanks. Lessons learned the hard way.

Iwo Jima was the last "proving ground" so to speak. Lessons learned to that point determined the appearence of the tanks. Okinawa saw tanks used much like the those in Europe. They had to have the additional protection, but had to travel longer distances than ever before.

Commonwealth tankers in Burma and the like faced similar challenges, yet there is little documentation of their numerous modifications either.

Fascinating subject for sure.
