Trafalgar Class in the ice

Recommended Posts

I wanted to play with some Precision Ice and Snow before using it in a diorama that is probably more ambitious than my skills will allow.

Some pictures on the interweb of HMS Tireless in the Arctic ice gave me the inspiration to butcher Airfix's Trafalgar Class sub, and experiment with a few different icy textures. Figures are from WEM, which I tried to bulk out a bit with PVA, but still look very flat.

It was a fun little project, so I hope you enjoy a slightly different presentation of a modern sub.

Thanks for the kind words, they are much appreciated.

Many years ago I worked on VLF transmitters and this is a small tribute to the guys on the receiving end as it were. It's a job i don't think I'd ever be able to do.

I wish someone would produce a Resolution class Polaris sub in 1/350 though.

Cheers,

Paul

That's fantastic, the floating slabs of ice are really good. It must've been a bleak place to be.

Thanks Will. The ice slabs were made by sprinkling the snow powder over a thin layer of clear resin to give a translucent look, then the resin was broken into fragments when it had set.

Cheers,

Paul

Not sure they would have room on board for that gang plank though?!

It appears to be sectional and bolted together. I assume that it's stowed outside the pressure hull. Possibly someone on here can enlighten us?

Thanks for all the kind comments guys, I really appreciate it.

nice to see a sub not on a stand.

I've got one of those as well, to be honest, the WEM version, but I wanted to find a way to bring it to life a bit more and show the scale of it. Funny how sometimes it's the simplest ideas that grab the imagination the most.

Cheers,

Paul
