Airfix 1:76 Cromwell

Recommended Posts

I don't build tanks, but this kit is a present of a good friend who did not know that I don't build tanks and this GB is a good chance to deviate into the new territory

Airfix kit is a nice little set with good level details for the scale and almost perfect fit.

I spent about half an hour and he vehicle is half done:

Why? Personally I find these cutters quite sexy

The Cullins Cutter was only ever fitted to one Cromwell as a prototype and it didn't get any further than Bovington.....I'd imagine that ploughing into a hedge and having your tank stop dead and then collapse into a heap of scrap iron and popped rivets might have been part of the problem, Cromwells weren't terribly sturdy things. :wicked:

Hi Sarge,

I can do this as I have one on the go, but probably not until Sunday afternoon if you can wait till then?

Kind regards

Ben

The World Cup impedes my model making performance significantly.

Nevertheless, I made some progress on the armour

The gun suffers from significant form offset

I decided to replace it with a metal tube from Albion Alloys

That is a smart looking kit and you are making excellent progress with it. Shame about the gun barrel - but sounds like you are on top of it (not the gun barrel - the problem! )

Glad I read this thread - I was contemplating putting the hedge cutter onto my Tamiya Cromwell. After this, I didn't think I'll bother! Cheers :D

Nice progress - that barrel is appalling casting, but glad you can fix it!

Assembled the compensator and attached it to the barrel

I found plastic guards way too thick - made my own of wire

Guards in place

I like this kit and the build, will be following. One question, which diameter tube did you use for the barrel replacement? metal tube from Albion Alloys I might get one myself.

As I said, I used "available" diameter - I bought a bunch of tubes from AA during last Telford show. None of them matched the barrel exactly, so I chose the tube that was the closest, clutched a piece of it in the chuck of my Proxxon Micromot and ground off the excess on 120 grit sanding paper trusting my eyes only (although I know how to use vernier calipers :) )

I'm pretty sure that Albion Alloys have a tube that would match the barrel precisely but I did not want to bother and used what was available.
