DaveJL
Hello all, Here is my next project to run alongside my Op Herrick builds. 1/48 Su-30MKI Flanker of the Indian Air Force. Don't have a kit just yet but i've ordered Academy's Su-30m2. I do, however, have all the aftermarket (macbook not included!): Will be using Wolfpack design Su-35 conversion set (not all the parts will be used), Wolfpack Design Su-30 Cockpit set, master brass pitot tube, Begemot decals, Quickboost nose cone, Aerobonus FAB-500 and KAB-500L bombs. I'll also add a Litening II targeting pod. I'll have to scratch-build the thrust vectoring nozzles somehow! Vital reference: Will post more pictures when the kit arrives. DaveJL
Cheers mate and thanks for the link. I might buy a set of Aires nozzles and butcher the kit ones to create the TVC nozzles. Dave

Flankerman
Does the 'S-30M2' (as it says on the box ) come with standard Su-27UB fins - as well as the taller square-tipped Su-30MKK/2 fins ??? You'll need the standard UB fins - with bigger rudders - for the MKI. Ken

DaveJL
Made a start this morning. First job was to mark up the forward section that needed to be removed to fit the Su-30 forward fuselage (offset IRST and refuelling probe): Next I moved onto the Wolfpack cockpit. Very nice indeed. I added to extra 'screens' to the rear IP to depict the 5 MFDs in the rear of the MKI: Cockpit assembled: Painted: K-36 ejection seats: Once the cockpit was painted, I fitted it to the fuselage. The fit is superb, with only the casting blocks on the base of the tubs needing removed: A lot of tape and clamps but I wanted to ensure the seal is good as the next job will be to chop away more the forward fuselage to make room for the LEX which holds the canards. Also built up all the ordnance. Going for a full load on this one! Ordnance consists of 4x R-73 AAMs, 2x FAB-500 bombs, 2x KH-31 anti radiation missiles, 1x R-27 AAM, 2x KAB-500 LGBs and 1x Litening pod. The AAM's and KH-31s are from the kit, the bombs are by Aerobonus and the Litening is a Hasegawa example. Pleased with it so far but the next job will be the biggest...chopping the fuselage for the canards! More soon. Dave
DaveJL
Biggest part of this job was going to be the addition of the LEX for the canards. So I marked out the areas to be cut: Wolfpack provide nothing in the way of instructions for the cutting, so I measured all the panels etc and did my best for the outline. The cuts were done in line with the shape of the resin parts, and I was quite pleased with them. The resin however, was awful. It would not fit into the cuts i'd made, despite numerous dry fittings, trimmings and movements. One side appeared to be cast at an angle, while the other seemed to be too short. Huge steps (the ones that are almost impossible to get flush were evident top and bottom). Here is the result: I'm no master modeler, my skills are moderate, but this was a joke. I am very frustrated at the poor quality of the resin castings. Project terminated until I figure out a way to make the LEX and shoulders for the canards as I will not be using the resin parts and chopping up another perfectly good kit. Will need to buy a new model too, if I decide to return to it at all. First time i've ever binned a kit. Dave
Flankerman
I feel your pain Dave - but don't despair !!! I've done the conversion in 1/72 scale - using plastic card and Milliput....... My build of the Su-30MKI and Su-30MM is here In the words of the song.... "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off - and start all over again".... Hope this helps.... woody37
Agree, better on a shelf until you're in a better frame of mind rather than the bin of regret. Don't give up mate, have a beer for now
Darth Vader
Don't bin it ( however tempting ) put it all in a box on a shelf in the garage. You never know you might want to have another go when there's nothing on tv
DaveJL
Cheers guys. The kit is in the bin as in my haste with the resin, I cracked half of the fuselage while attempting to adjust the resin. I managed to save the forward section and there is no damage to the cockpit or resin shoulders. My plan is to get a cheap donar kit (plan was to get one anyway to use the nozzles to make the TVC nozzles) and use the resin shoulders as a template to make ones from card that won't need as much cutting of the fuselage. DaveJL
Bought a replacement kit with a load of additional sprues off ebay for £10 so hoping to return to this project shortly now that i've calmed down Plan is to make the shoulders for the canards out of card somehow. Why can't there just be a 1/48 kit with them already?!! Dave
Flankerman
Plan is to make the shoulders for the canards out of card somehow. Dave, Get yourself a set of Su-37 or Su-33 drawings from here - the canards and shoulders are essentially the same. (if you don't know Cyrillic, Sukhoi Su-33 is Сухой Су-33 ) You'll need to scale them up - but at least you should get the correct outline - then cut thick plastic card - attach - and blend in with Milliput or other filler. The biggest job is sanding down to get the correct cross-section shape - not all that difficult. Good luck with you Su-30MKI - and stick with it. George Looks fairly similar, but the resin parts I had were definitely distorted in someway. My cuts were identical to the ones you have made.
