A BIG Rolls Royce

Recommended Posts

Each morning I go to my mail box and look for the words Britmodeler  a BIG RR.

Now what will I do Codger?  Will have to wait for the glamour shots of the Masterpiece.

Well done!!

Quality before quantity. I wish more people would think and act this way. You have my deepest respect.

Thank you so much for sharing every single step including every mishap. This makes this build unique and is well worth reading through so many pages of content. There is so much information, I bet every member of this forum could easily find something to learn in the depth of this thread. No matter what topic they build.

I know you said you wouldn't go for any other build. I can understand this very well and respect your decision. But still I hope you rethink it.

Jan

Jan,

This is a very eloquent and insightful message and I appreciate it deeply. And to the others who have been so kind, I thank you all.

Contemplating another advanced build has gone on continuously for the last couple of years. There are several factors that have made me be negative about the idea here 'in public'.

One is seeing the large number of highly advanced, big-scale builds undertaken and currently in progress. You guys are tremendous, with creativity, machining, patina and huge skills. You all have simply 'raised the bar' from three + years ago when I started. I might have caused a stir when I started but now to me, my effort seems dated and handily eclipsed by at least a dozen Pocher and scratch-built projects. Oh for sure I love it like crazy but I sense I will have 'nothing new' to share with the pack who are advancing the 'sport' of advanced model building.

Another factor is the need to summon this level of patience and discipline again to produce acceptable work. I confess, I am now enjoying jockeying around the camera instead of 1mm parts and slippery bits of chrome.

The last really big issue is the physical one; greatly diminished vision and old geezer tremors are making tasks like placing a spot of paint, cutting materials to very close tolerances and locating 00-90 bolts in .046 holes, very daunting and sweaty tasks. Fumbling is not fun with scalpels in hand. Adds greatly to the time-to-build and subtracts from the having-fun quotient.

Although I know much more now than back then (this has always been a learning experience for me - not a teaching experience) and would theoretically take less time to get 'right' parts, I feel I may have just completed the best I can ever accomplish. But yes, I confess, the continuous study of 1:1 classics of the '30's gives me ideas all the time about how I'd do another.

But I live vicariously though the work you all share and I will always be here watching, helping, asking and suggesting. I'll never say 'Never' to a new build, but for now, I cherish looking across the room and seeing my Phantom anytime I wish.

So thanks to Jan and all who have expressed desire to see more scraps from my bench. Indeed, I seem unable to completely halt the process and will shortly post some minor tweeks of just the last day or so - forgotten from much earlier in the build.

The sign of a professional is knowing when to stop - so apparently I'll never make the professional ranks.....

For Pocher Rolls crazies...

A tip for an idea hatched very early on and just remembered while taking these last few photos. I wanted to show tire contact with the ground but not take a sanding belt to $45-per tires. Craft acrylic paints are your friend. Adheres to the rubber MMC tires just fine and a drybrushing is all it needs.

It's subtle (if done right) but adds so much of the full-sized look. In this case I mixed black with maybe 1/3 of ivory color; didn't use white to make the gray because it would be a very 'cool' gray. The ivory makes it a warmer, slightly brown gray. In keeping with my used but not decrepit theme. Go out and view your tires:

Maybe seen a bit easier from the back:

Now something nice to say about Pocher; our mascot Lady is a gem. In fact. she 'works' just like the prototype. If you make your hood panels hinge to open upward, (instead of having to pull them off to see the engine), she must be turned 90 degrees so her flowing 'wings' allow the panel to clear when opened. The threaded cap allows this and when hood is closed she will point forward to lead the way to the next casino :

OK, I'll stop now with this Thread-From-Hell....

The fact that this build is now finished almost brought tears to my eyes. The fact you may not do another, even more so. It has been a fantastic, and very educational, build, and you have presented it in a very down-to-earth and modest way. I'm sure many of us have learnt a lot from your work, and even more from your attitude towards it.

No matter what you think of your work, to me, at least, it is exceptional, I don't think I'm alone.

Step up and take a bow, Mr C. Even the humblest sometimes have to acknowledge the applause.......

Mr.C, I have enjoyed every minute of the journey along this topic and like Ginger says in his post above, gone to Britmodeller almost on a daily basis to look for an additional post from you on A BIG Rolls Royce.

I have learnt so much from your posts and sincerely thank you for taking the time and effort to keep us informed of your progress.

Thank you, Chris

I must say again, I am overwhelmed by those of you who have found my hacking and yacking to be of any value whatsoever. And who took the time to write and say so.

You forum members have added immensely to the pleasure and adventure of this build and I am deeply fortunate.

I look forward to all your projects and interacting there with questions, comments and any tips I can contribute. You are all inspiring to me and I'm glad to peek over your shoulders.:worthy:

About three years ago, I saw some pictures of a Rolls Royce engine in the MMC photo gallery and I thought that, it was the most realistic engine I had ever seen. At that time I was on another forum and was urged by Roy Mattblack to come over to the Britmodeller forum. I made the switch and, quickly made a few friends that, were building the 'biggies" as we called the Pochers then. One of the first guys that started posting on my Mercedes build was Mr. C.

Over the last three years we have become good friends and talk frequently both on and off the forum. Over and above the incredible miniature he has turned out here with his Rolls is, the fact that he's a great guy. We have pushed each other, criticized each other, traded tips and experiences and just about everything else. But, the most important thing his build has brought me is, through it I now have a very good friend. For me, this is what I hoped I would derive from joining the forum.

I would feel remiss if I didn't also mention there are others who have become good friends as well and you know who you are but, this is about Mr. C at the moment.

He is now sending me and the others emails complaining of Pocher withdrawals and wants us to get busy on our various builds so, he can stay involved.

This Rolls has so many subtle modifications, scratch built parts, innovative ideas and just generally great craftsmanship that, the entire thread needs to be required reading for anyone contemplating building a Pocher Rolls Royce.

Bravo, my friend!

Which will take four months for those who read equally fast as I.

No minute of it was wasted time for me!

Chas, I will miss your updates on this build. No more progress (or steps backward) on the great RR.

It is almost unthinkable.

The journey you have finished, in which you allowed us to sit front row, has been fantastic and the result, well, what can you say, the model is really bloody marvellous.

I have picked up lots of interesting techniques from your build and will look back to them many times.

I hope I will ever be able to come close to what you have achieved, but I will have to practice a bit more.

Well done, I trust you are satisfied with the results an I hope you will be enjoying the view of this model standing in the room for a long time.

In the mean time I will struggle along with my AR and hope to see lots of advice, critics etc from you (and others), but that will need an update from my side first.

Thanks for sharing your endeavours on this build with us.

Once more I am astonished to have yet another group of members, new and old, describing the unforeseen impact this old crock has had on their modeling lives. Words fail to express my appreciation.

I only hoped to present work for criticism, comments and lessons from those higher on the ladder than I. And to do it all with a sense of humor - especially when times got tough - BRITTLE 40 year-old Plastic  for instance !!.

I must dispel the idea that I'm going far away, never to return (unless the Big Sleep overtakes me) to this large group of friends I've been blessed to make here. I assure all that if you'll tolerate me, I will invade all your excellent threads of complex projects, with questions, comments and a smile or two. I live vicariously in the work of all of you.

Yet again - Thank You All.

What a pity that all your pics are lost thanks to PB.

I am most sad about this for personal reasons. But I am further saddened that this body of work is rendered near-useless for those who have interest to build Pochers in general and RR's in particular. And have been very kind and generous contributors to my thread.

1060 photos which I had hoped would bring help and encouragement to potential builders are gone. If 'one picture is worth 1000 words', how many words does 1060 pictures equal? A million sounds crazy right?

Sure I have all those on back-up but I find the task too onerous to load them into a new host and replace here. I am also gutted that many of the threads I enjoyed and looked forward to are similarly defaced.

I'm well aware of 'business decisions' but PB could have found much more reasonable ways to further monetize their site. It surely looks apparent they don't want the 'little guy' business...

At least they should have given a fair warning and a chance to get your stuff off or archive the threads in some way or form.

I can only begin to imagine how you feel about this.

I feel your pain Codger, the loss of information/reference  due to the terms of service changes is devastating and I too have some colossal threads on another site that are now barren of pictures and due to the age of them I'm unable to go and edit them to relink the pics.

when I came back to the hobby I would actively seek out involved  build threads such as yours to try and pick up and learn as many different techniques as I could and there is no doubt that fast tracked improvement in my work and when I began to start posting I would try and do the same and share as much as possible during a build as i felt in a way I was giving something back so posted many step by steps and thousands of pictures.

i do understand the need for a business to make a profit but feel the way that Photobucket have handled this to be nothing short of a car wreck. surely a clearer warning of the changes and a reasonable yearly fee would have been the way to go, I mean there is a 100 million users  (according to wiki ) so  if they charged say 30 dollars a year and a quarter of those users got on board they would make a decent profit.

instead people are bailing in droves and the Internet is a sea of those hideous bandwidth/upgrade notices

Don't let it take the wind out of your sails and keep posting buddy

Remember, this thing was in an attic for 3+ decades. My great joy is that now I have the car right here at my side. My great sadness is that those of you chaps who followed, contributed and found some value here no longer have that full access. I really just wanted to get some fence-sitters motivated to continue the Pocher classic legacy. You are certainly one Poul.

Sure got me motivated!!!

Just getting into the oil lines now and WHAMMO no pictures anymore!

Very sad a company would do that with such a work of art.

Well I'm in search of pictures and articles now so I can continue on this great venture.

Saddened to hear you were using my project for reference and now the Money Monsters have ruined it.

If it's any help at all, here are two very recent (but fully assembled) detailed engine shots. I truly hope you find some value in them.

I strongly advise you to create a build thread here and I will gladly drop in with tips and advice on what you do. My love affair with the Pocher Rolls doesn't end with my car.

It's truly unfortunate that, all of your build photos are no longer on your thread as in addition to adding to the journey of your building experience it really deprives the reader of a great resource for building their own RR. What happened to the saying that, nothing is ever gone from the Internet?

Even though I have all of my pictures from my builds stored on my computer and could have used those to rebuild my threads, I spent a few hours yesterday downloading over 2000 pictures off of PB. The only reason that I spent the time to do it is because they are already sized for the the forum and can be uploaded to another hosting site if I had the energy to do it. As my Mercedes has passed it's shelf life here, it's unlikely that I will do it. But, somewhere down the road if someone is interested in the build or pictures, I will be able to help out.

I sincerely hope that you have enough of your pictures saved for yourself. Epic build and a great loss and shame to lose three plus years of work!!

Would love to have some input from you Codger and anyone on this site.

When I first stated reading this you sound very much like myself.

I even finished off the pistons so they look used and carboned up.

Yes I know you don't see them but I know they're there. Lol

How do I start a build thread and maybe get pictures out there?
