1/72 Airfix Lancaster B.VII NX611 'Just Jane'

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've finally got around to starting my 1/72 Lancaster B.VII, to be finished as NX611. I've used the Eduard B.III (S) interior set for this kit, which, although not entirely authentic for a B.VII, has all of the important bits. The biggest visual discrepancy using the Eduard set is that of the starboard handrail, which is simply a less complex design than that in '611. The aircraft will be built in the condition as shown in my illustration. The fuselage has not been 'buttoned up' yet, in case anyone notices any glaring irregularities before I close her up. The B.III (S) mid-upper blanking plate is being fitted and the new mid-upper turret opening will be cut once the fuselage is closed. The aircraft will be brush painted, as with my B.III (S) ED825/G. The landing gear will be down, but I am yet to decide if the bomb bay doors will be open or closed. The interior has been an interesting first proper foray into building etched details.

EXCELLENT start to your build.

This will be very interesting and super build thread to follow.

MY Uncle used to work on LANCASTERS and other warbirds as a LAC during his stint in the .RAF during WWII.

Very good neat start ..

Keep it up. :worthy:

Hi HOUSTON,

Thanks for the encouragement, she is now 'buttoned' up and has had the new mid-upper turret opening cut. The taller nav dome has been fettled to fit the canopy. NX611 and ED825/G have swapped canopies as each fits better on the other Lanc. NX611 is temporarily fitted with ED825/G's front turret and fairing to get a feel for things. I'll hopefully have a photo up soon

Hi all,

A few bad photos taken on my phone as a quick update;

(An as yet unidentified Airfix Buccaneer restoration and Spitfire VN318 can be seen)

Actually the photos are quite clear on MY screen...

Looks like you are on a roll and I think it's very good work.

Keep up the :goodjob:

(By the way MY Uncle Clifford was stationed at Church Fenton, and One or two Lincolnshire bases although he did not come from that area.then worked in North Africa and Tripoli during WWII .... On Lancaster's and anything else that he was required to do).

I like Buccaneers.... Looking forward to ALL of your builds..

Good neat work.. :worthy:

Hi HOUSTON,

Thanks, I hope the rest of my build meets your expectations :)

I have, in planning, a build of Avro Shackleton WR960 as preserved, with everything inside scratch built.

My granddad was in the Merchant Navy and My Uncle had a WW1 US army knife tucked away from his service years. Unfortunately, that's about as much as I know of my family's military and wartime past

Been toying with getting a Lancaster myself, so I will be watching this thread with a lot of interest. :) love the work done thus far. Modelling on a train track isn't a bad idea... if you get annoyed you can turn the power on and let the train take it far away... or the other side of the table! :Plol

My Grandad on my mums side was apparently a Desert Rat, I only found out on my Nans funeral because my old girl didn't think I'd be insterested. Even tho I was in the ATC or that I had applied for the RAF (failed the medical :( )... Mothers eh? But due to a rift in the family I fear I will never find out what he did... :(

Kind Regards

Dazz

Hi all,

In a bit of a rut with this aircraft, in that I unfortunately damaged the canopy whilst cutting a new panel. The idealist standards are there - the modelling skills are not. I've modified the canopy a fair bit, so don't really fancy doing it all again with a spare. Dipping it in clear did no good, so is it a simple case of just polishing the thing?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

Evening all,

Firstly my apologies for the lack of WIP updates across the board, I've had very little time for modelling over the last few months, only really getting back to it last Monday.

The a/c is finally nearing completion, with an aim to finish her for New Year's. A lot of the progress has concerned painting, with the wings and tail attached today and given top coats. I'll post a photo update tomorrow when the fuselage decals are setting. As the kits-world warbird decals are behind on their release date, I am using the Canmilair decals with the old coding. It may be replaced in due course, but that is what I have for now.

Engines 1 and 4 are hung, with 2 and 3 staying off until the fuselage is finished. Sally B and FM213 should be finished in quick succession. Decals for the latter are in the aforementioned decal set, whereas Sally B requires her mid-upper turret to be painted, exhausts fitted and wing decals applied. Sally B and NX611 should hopefully be finished by mid-day Wednesday.

Hi all,

The fuselage decals are on, so whilst i continue to be gassed by decalfix, here's a photo update. Work has gone along pretty swiftly so it's restricted to naff iphone photos. I'll set the a/c up with proper lighting etc when she's finished, hopefully I can borrow a fan powerful enough to get all four props trying to fly off.

The first three photos show the new paint mixed for NX611, blanking of the windows, the discovery of a few uneven areas on the fuselage and the scratch built starboard vent;

The next three show the painting of the wings and a few other smaller parts followed by fitting of the wings, hanging of engines 1 and 4 and test fitting of engines 2 and 3 prior to varnishing of the fuselage.

Once NX611, FM213 and Sally B are finished, work will resume on the four V-Bombers, with a Buccaneer, B-29 and Canberra PR9 lined up as the next trio.

Thanks for looking,

Hi all,

Thanks for the interest chaps. Paul J, i'm using those very decals, and i'm rather more pleased with the result than the initial quality of printing would lead you to presume. The serials and nose art have set quite well, but the wing roundels are unsuitable, so the kit decals will be used for the wings.

The plan is to put NX611, FM213 and PA474 in a glass case with some three Lancs memorabilia. A rather large space has opened up on the model railway, so I may look into scratch building a hangar big enough for two WW2 'heavies' and a couple of fighters... or a B-29.

Here's a rather large photo update, still iPhone photos I'm afraid. It's not the best Lanc ever built (or should I say painted) as a fair amount of panel line detail has been lost on the upper fuselage. I've begun to scribe that back in on top of the paint and it's going fairly well so far, being complete from the nose to forward spar. Rudders, engines 2 and 3 and the resin mainwheels have been fitted for effect as they are at present not ready for permanent fitting. With the surface that the Lanc will be sitting on, I'm still toying as to sanding the mainwheels down to make them weighted. Bomb doors are in storage along with the rear turret, one both are painted they will be fitted. The last items to go on will be the props and gear doors. I hope this progress proves visually pleasing, as I know i'm rather happy with her so far. The last photo highlights the as-of-yet non-sanded wings and tail. Once sanded and (hopefully not) patched, they will be varnished for decalling / fitting of the rudders and other small parts. The nose aerials, windows and blister are also ready for fitting. There's a few smears from the decalfix to clean up and the varnish finish should hopefully even out when the second coat is applied to seal in the decals.

Hi all,

Thanks for the kind words.

The Lanc isn't finished, she's just shy of one bomb door, the outboard flaps and the rudders. Can't post a photo as my laptop is playing up, but can hopefully have it sorted when she's finished. I'll be making a start on the Halifax immediately after.

My apologies for the lack of reply, I've been having issues with my profile. Somehow, my username has changed to WR960. I don't know how, but my profile pic has gone, my join date has changed and my signature has disappeared. I've contacted Mike, so hopefully the username can be reverted and I'll sort the rest myself. I hope to update you all on a finished Lancaster very soon.

All the best,

WV908

Hi Woody37,

Thanks for the kind comment, we should hopefully be seeing some more cropping up once the kits-world decal set is out. The LAHC has a Martin 250CE mid-upper to fit to NX611 to replace the old turret cupola, so a fairing won't be required.

Regards,
