Vosper 73' MTB Type 1 (Airfix 1/72)

Recommended Posts

Well here we go with for me the opposite end of the scale. Modern Italeri @ 1/35 to Ancient (1971) Airfix @ 1/72.

Airfix

First step was putting together the 4 part hull, I'd read on various builds that this is a b****r. I've got to say it went together fairly easily.

I started at the stern and worked slowly forward in steps. The slot the hull sides fit into is overlarge so the sides need to be pushed out in the slots to minimize filler on the outside.

To upgrade the standard kit I'm hoping to use the Coastal Craft fittings

I started with the twin 20mm oerlikon. The gun mount is not correct for this craft so it was a case of modify the kit part.

Yeah right ! Cheers Buddy (?)

Pleased with progress today . . . . The handrail / stanchions around the 20mm according to Airfix were made from 3" dia poles !

Thought I'd go the brass rod approach :banghead: Proably possible but I chickened out and tried with plastic rod. Still an exercise in patience but not to bad and I'm pleased with the results

Nice start Kev, I remember having this one, me and a mate stuffed a .303 and shotgun round in the hull, set it on fire and sent it on its way down the local lake at dark othirty, good times. Looking forward to seeing how yours come together.

Another step forward with the 20mm - photo etch been driving me mad today! :banghead:

Then the whole point of this build is to see if I can manage a) 1/72 (to me micro scale) and B) learn how to manipulate photo etch.

Not to bad :hmmm: not sure about magazines, think i'll check the dimensions tomorrow.

For a bit of light relief  I thought I'd make a start on the cowls knowing full well they are going to need alot of work. The fit is better with the locating pins removed ! Clearly seen at the back of the cowl is one of said pins which will need to be ground out. I intend trying to reduce the thickness of the material as well.

My sanity today was saved by listening to others advice ! I now wear a wood workers apron clamped to the desk, if I had a pound for every time this has saved me from crawling round the floor I'd be able to pay someone else to do the build

Thanks for stopping by, your observations welcome . . . .

Apron is good and so is a large box.

A light under the table also helps, one of them push button types. plus a floor that is cleared now and again.

'I know, I know', this is a dream I have :banghead:

Cheers foxy :coolio:

Update with vents now looking better after having had a good looking at with dental burrs. I tend to use an ordinary battery driver fotating at < 1000rpm rather than model drills rotating at 30,000+ rpm

I wonder how much modelling has improved since the advent of macro photography  I thought I'd finished took pictures . . . Yuk !!

For a bit of light relief I turned to the bridge area . . .

P1060435 (Copy)

Note according to plans/pictures the area above the door does not rise up :banghead: .The various throttles etc seem vertically challanged and the compass is definately feeling rather shy.

The location of the steering wheel would be good for steering with your knees :mental:

Looks like its back to scratch building :yahoo:

Thanks Guys,

Your support is appreciated.

I'm lucky enough to have the required information and stupid enough to think I can do it better . . . . .

Only time wil tell :mental:

Need your thoughts, looking at http://www.little-cars.co.uk/list2.html

I see they fine lead wire and coloured copper wire in small diameters - is it worth getting?

Sceondly they do masking tape in 1, 2 and 3mm widths - is it going to help with tight curves I'm going to have to mask. I do have/use the tamiya 6mm.

Cheers Kev

Hello! A brilliant idea, which will save lots of crawling. Unless you forget to unhook it when you stand up. Ask me how I know...

Great work so far, and plenty more to come by the looks of it. The new gun mounting is coming along fab.

All the best, Ray

Love the voice frying pans - it wasn't until you said what they were meant to be that it even occurred to me. Looking forward to seeing this one transformed in quality in your usual style.

Martin your a bad person :fight: I'm holding you responsible

Insanity has prevaled :pilot:

I was sat there looking at the bits I wasn't happy with and had to be chewed off, then smoothed, filled and replaced etc etc ......

The final straw was when I realised the bridge wind deflectors were moulded solid and would look so much better if they stood off . . . ..

P1060445 (Copy)

The difference in height is due to the solid wind deflector!

Dont know if its possible but you dont know until . .. . . . . and I've still got the original pieces
