Sgt.Squarehead
Having seen so many splendid 1/35 Panthers on here of late, I figured I should have a go at offering up something for those of us who prefer their models a little bit smaller: I've tried to make the Zimmerit coating as thin as possible so as not to obliterate the underlying detail such as the interlocking armour plates: The turret is Revell with an Italeri cupola, Zimmerit is homemade with Mr.Surfacer 500, a scalpel and some swearing.....Can't pretend it's up to the standard of some of the masterpieces to be found here, but I reckon with a bit more cleanup it should look OK (& spare track links will hide the worst faults). The hull is probably gonna take me a while! Edited May 31, 2016 by Sgt.Squarehead

oz!
naw mate i wouldn't worry about that, personally i would do that bit before tackling the rest of the front hull, just take your time and it'll work out ok, the texture of the zimmerit looks particularly effective. best regards oz!. badger
Thats looking very tasty indeed. Much nicer and more realistic than the regular and far too tidy dragon zimmerit. Watching with interest! ! Courtney
I like the effect on the 'missing', damaged, worn, zimmerit as it was rarely perfect

Sgt.Squarehead
Cheers lads.....I've actually been doing a bit on these models recently, my first attempt at zimmeritting the hull ended badly, but fortunately it's easy to sand this stuff back and start again. At present I'm trying to persuade the Revell sprocket and L&L track to sit nicely on the ESCI/Italeri hull and other running gear. Unfortunately the two companies adopted slightly different philosophies. ESCI/Italeri chose a compromise design which looks OK but has pairs of wheels fused into one thicker part, whereas Revell did it more or less right.....It's doable but a bit fiddly as I don't initially have a precise location for the sprockets. Sgt.Squarehead
Got the track runs done: I've tried to model the slightly saggy look often seen on veteran Panthers (the two I'm building will probably be Panzer Lehr survivors).....The left side track is slightly off at the idler, I've tweaked it a little since taking this picture, but it's still not perfect. In retrospect I should have used the Revell idler as the Italeri part is possibly a bit small and certainly too small for the Revell track with its inaccurate pitch. Still, I think they should look OK with some judicious use of Mr.Surfacer to fill gaps and maybe a schurzen panel or two in place.....Quite how I'm going to fix the sponson issue with these in the way remains to be seen.
PlaStix
Hi Sarge, Any progress on this? I was hoping to pick up tips for my build from yours! I was well impressed with your Zimmeritting skills!! Like badger said it's far more realistic than the Dragon version. Kind regards, Stix
Sgt.Squarehead
Rather than start a new thread, I've retitled this one as the build above is a prime candidate. Some of the builds that will be appearing in here have been stalled for a decade, others are much more recent.....But enough is enough, time to finish 'em (before they finish me)!

Sgt.Squarehead
I've got to find me shovel so I can dig 'em out of the layer of dust.....But they are coming, and trust me on this, there are plenty of 'em!

Sgt.Squarehead
All of 'em I hope Ben......On the wall above me as I type are thirteen A4 box files, each containing between three and seventeen models that are stalled at various stages in the build process. There are twenty four work-trays on a rack adjacent to my bench, each of those also has a build in it, some have two! I really do need to get my finger out, because I've still got about another two thousand in boxes on two of the other three walls that I haven't even started yet.....And I keep buying more!
badger
Wow!! That makes me feel a bit better about the 600 odd (plus 200ish wingy things) I have in the stash. There's another you might want to add - just noticed on braille scale forum that armory have just released a 1/72 luchs - that's 3 now!
Sgt.Squarehead
Wow....Rob H contacted me about it earlier and I thought he was referring to their (massively complex) multi-media kit, but it's yet another injection version. This is going to be an expensive couple of months, the MaCo Luchs (my preferred option because it should be the easiest build) will be out before the end of the month too. BTW - The builds listed above are just the 1/72 AFVs.....I've also got a Nieuport 23, Bf.110, B-25G, Dewotine 520, Fairy Fulmar and an Autogyro cluttering the place up.....Then there's a couple of sci-fi builds, plus two Velociraptors and a Triceratops.
Paul Giles
Nicely done Andy, certainly looks the part. I have to do some Zimmerit on a Sturmtiger in the near future and will have to investigate the stuff you used, I was going to try Milliput, or Green Stuff, or model putty, but this looks a lot easier. I think you are trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear using the Esci offering, mind you I think you are managing it quite well and the build looks to be going along very nicely, well done so far. All the best, Paul
Sgt.Squarehead
OK.....Here's one for those of you who have been around the place for a while: Its a UM 1/72 BA-6M started as part of the SCW GB back in (IIRC) 2009......It was pulled from the GB when I realised that the BA-6M never went to Spain. Shame really because there were only three parts left to add and it's pretty much painted, but hey it stalled, so it's sat in its build tray ever since (not less than five years). So old is this build that UM's now notorious plastic melting vinyl was not yet deemed to be an accepted fact and half-hearted measures like a thick coat of Klear were considered sufficient to to contain any corrosive properties they might have.....Fat chance, it's already eating the spare wheel rims: The chassis was only dry-fitted to The hull, but the vinyl tyres have welded it in place: While various Zverobits cure I'm going to finish it up and then we will get to see just how long it takes the tyres to destroy the running gear.....After that it can serve as a burned out wreck! So.....Who still thinks a coat of Klear will save them from this stuff (I used three and dipped the tyres in it)?
Sgt.Squarehead
Seven years stored safely in a work tray, a couple of minutes back on my desk.....New drive shaft reqired (Reminder to self.....Don't handle rod shaped parts with needle-point tweezers! ): The new formula Hu.30 is rather different to the old one, isn't it. Some of you may remember these guys: But I'm going to need yet another thread (in the 'Wingy-Thing' section) for their steed.

Robert Stuart
Is that a Ford Model T? Well ... the BA-6M looks as if it's built on a GAZ-AAA chassis, which was a licence built Ford truck, developed from the Ford A car, the replacement for the model T. So, not so far off topic Edited June 16, 2016 by Robert Stuart
