Sommerfeld Track

Sommerfeld track was commonly used at many USAAF and RAF airfields during the war. IIRC it came as 10ft 8 inch x 75ft 6 inch sections. That would be roughly 43mm x 303mm in 1/76th scale. I am looking to portray a pile of rolled sections of Sommerfeld Matting, waiting to be used. Could anyone suggest what might be a good source material to created such rolls in 1/76th? I was thinking along the lines of medical gauze, brushed with PVA, rolled and allowed to set, then painted, yes?
