Recommendations for model snow

I am considering doing a 1/35 scale scene with snow.

I haven't had to model this before and was wondering what you would recommend to give a good representation of snow on an AFV?

Thanks

The latest issue of the AK Weathering Magazine is dedicated to snow and ice. One mix that was suggested is a blend of micro balloons and marble dust (available from art shops), mixed with dilute white glue. This was more of a local application used to represent snow accumulation on a vehicle.

There are also a few proprietary products around for snow: Andrea do one, and Tamiya produce a snow textured 'paint'. Check out model railway scenic products as well.

cheers,

Jason

Thanks Jason

I live in Australia, and am not aware of the magazine you mention. Can you help with more details please?

Yes, I have noticed a few proprietary brands around for modelling snow, but have struggled to find any decent photos of how each looks. Some representations just look like white paint, and that's not the look I am after. To my eye, snow has a bit of a sparkle about it, so the micro balloons may be the way to go. I have heard of powder and flour being used, but also that these can turn yellow over time (?), and don't seem to have any 'sparkle'.

Thanks for the reply,

PR

Here's a link for the magazine:

The reason for the mixture micro balloons and marble dust is as follows:

Adding marble powder helps to give the snow a more realistic appearance as I have found that using micro balloons alone produces a snow that is too foamy. White glue and water were added to complete the snow mixture.

Here are the other products:

There's also this stuff, which was mentioned here on BM last year:

I hasten to add that I've never done a snow diorama, so can't really comment on the efficacy or otherwise of the above materials and methods!

cheers,

Jason

Hello everybody and to Peter Roberts in particular.

We make the only purpose made Snow and Ice effects for precision scale modellers.

http://www.precisioniceandsnow.com/

Photobucket Chuck this address onto your top search bar

Our snow effects are capable of producing see-through sleet and snow and ice effects correctly at all scales. There is no evidence of particles and when photographed at super macro, the effects can be breath-taking.

Also, the sparkle is scale and the build is controlled by the user to achieve the correct scale from 1/178th up to 1/16th. Our Snow powders (Krycell FINE and EXTRA) are non toxic, completly safe, inert and are not hydroscopic.

We make a range of products , including soon the worlds first air-brush sprayable frost and light snow effects and pre-cast sheets of layered, tinted scale ice sheets.

We offer exclusive discounts to subscribers to Britmodeller also

Glad you liked our images. Please check out our website for more info. You can imprint our stuff to, either when it has set, or when it is wet. Great fun, but for the serious modeller if you see what I mean
