stevej60
Hi folks looking through my decals box I had not realised that the Airfix mustang I have was the starter set boxing with the markings of 112 squadron based in Italy so I thought It would make a good partner for the other Mustang I have just entered. The box has long gone but We all know what the kit is all about as there have been some superb examples posted here since it,s release this is my fourth go at this kit. Here,s progress so far. Wolwe82
good choice steve and for sure i m not saying that, because i have 112th sqn mustang on bench, waiting for final completing wonder how the original shark mouth ll fit. i was using the one from revell´s B, as comparing the B and D noses did not show any huge diference.. but still i had to cut the decal on 6-8 pieces and set it one by one. So be careful with the sharkmouth, try it first on dry, how much bending there is needed. I guess it ll be the most known GA*S marking? (i did not have right decals so used ex P-40´s GA*G ) I m asking, bcs i saw this marking made as kit on many photos and most of the kits varied in the painting scheme - talking about colour of spinel and the leading edges of wings. I did not have many informations about the painting for 112th sqn mustangs and sadly i found one too late for mine, but it could be handy for you (if not, just ignore me ). Here is link with the camouflage pattern, using somethiing called "firewall" pattern - probably bcs the nose grey field is painted exactly up to the firewall deck http://www.3squadron.org.au/subpages/Mustangs/3%20Sqn%20P-51K%20P4.htmOnly on thing could be wrong and thats the spinel, as from this photo http://www.3squadron.org.au/subpages/Mustangs/GA-S%20KH774.jpg it seems the spinel is painted in two tones, the front probably red, the back part else white or sky? I m sorry for a bit of wall of text here, i just found these informations too late for being used to my kit (so i used "artistic" licence to make the camouflage pattern), but i thought it could be usefull for you or someone else making the 112th sqn mustang

stevej60
Holliday over so back to normal and an hour a day modelling before work!same as other mustang build under surface colour applied and used as a base coat onto the top surface, replicated the louvres on the lower engine panels from plastic strip as I have seen this feature mentioned in a lot of builds of RAF machines. Thanks for looking.
Wolwe82
Looking nice steve. I dont know if you did try the canopy yet, but for me the front part did not sit well, sadly i found out too late there ll be too big gap. So saying this in advantage so you can take closer look on the area

stevej60
Here,s today,s progress: top colour grey sprayed this morning and two thinned cotes of green with a couple of hours between taking Wolwe,s info on board and a bit of further research I have gone for the "firewall"scheme. Thanks for looking.

stevej60
Here,s where I am with this one, glossed and most decals applied, yellow ID bands were a disaster so yet to be replaced,Airfix give you no codes with the kit possibly as they were not worn on their scheme, photos of the Aircraft in the firewall scheme show them mostly obscured by the code letters so I might be able to "cobble" up some from spares also according to most sources the roundels were of the type applied.

stevej60
Hi folks same stage as other Mustang, prop on and wash applied will give it a few hours then clean it off,on the subject of the prop hub Airfix have it as black,a lot of profiles have it as sky but the link Wolwe sent of an actual photo shows white rear and(as was 112 squadrons practice) what I assume is red. Thanks for your interest.
Wolwe82
thats looking nice steve, only one thing i did not noticed earlier but i hope it ll be early enough yet - i think their P-51D did not have the yellow leading edge of wings. At least on the photo i lined earlier there is nothing looking like that. There is some lighter panel around guns, but i dont know how to explain that though. Saying all that, i have to say i did such a stupid and embarasing mistake while doing my mustang... i dont know what i had in my head, but i switched the position of GA and the single letter on the right side of fuselage... Just noticed it by looking at your mustang.. stupid me

Wolwe82
Yea, i saw many models with the yellow strip and also the corgi replica, showing they dont have patent on all camouflages as well I m sorry, i would point it out earlier but i did not see you are going for it:( to be honest, ofcourse its your model and if you had there yellow strips, it would be still nice But if it is easy to remove it yet, why not to do so So its all up to you Steve, just have it any way you like it ofcourse.
