general melchett
No you're right Dave being based on the military J-79 the simplified CJ-805-23 with it's rear mounted fan was a natural smoker, an issue that was never really solved and seen as yet another negative compared to the opposition. It's sound was unique too with a high resonance at spool up becoming very uncomfortable at high power settings. The CV-880 had an even stranger sound with a haunting howl at idle much like the B-58. As the engines were powerful they were never fitted with water injection as they didn't require it....hate to think of the smoke screen laid down if they had....fully laden B-52D Guam launches come to mind !
Eric Mc
Didn't early JT9Ds as fitted to 747-100s have water injection?
general melchett
They did Eric, both the JT9D– 3AW and JT9D–7AW series of engines, (as used by both B747 100 and 200's) had the complex system fitted in the early years.
bzn20
They also bent shafts . In the early days BOAC's Eng base at Heathrow had various -100 747s of different opperators waiting for spare engines to be flown in after going Tech on the way in/before departure. I think the improved engine was a -7Q .
