Beefys Boatyard 1/35 MTB 74 St Nazaire Raid

Recommended Posts

Well after some encouragement from a friend I will start to post some photos of an ongoing build that has been taking me some time now.

A similar idea and build has been started in another thread so just to keep things separate and not tread on any toes I have started my own here the Idea is to have the Italeri MTB at the dockside getting made ready for a raid unlike a build by Chuck1d to have his returning after the event.

These are some of the kits that will be used and the reference I have been using so far.

This is the basic layout of the boat and dockside more soon

Interesting! The layout you have so far could so easily be Poole Quay, at least that was my instinctive reaction when I saw what you have done. I think it was seeing the railway lines on the dockside that did it.

Hi Martin thanks do you happen to have any photos of the dockside around that area as it is always good to have some reference to work from regarding the colour and wheathering

The detail on the wooden bollards was a bit soft so I scraped the face sides with a modelling saw to get a better grain effect they have been painted with Vallejo red primer and given an oil wash of raw umber and a piece of plastic card added to the rear to act as a spacer between the dock wall and the bollard

I have also started on the wave effect on the water with a mini drill the messy bit I like best :banghead:

I've heard lots about this project.

Seeing it puts things into perspective, you have got a real project on your hands.

Judging by your past work this will be awesome.

Are Pickfords going to move it once complete?

Cheers

Not quite a Pickfords van needed the base is a meter long by 700 mm wide just enough to have it all spread out the idea is to have the two trucks at the dockside off loading the supplies and ammunition with a maintenance crew just finishing off some repairs will be using some converted figures for this.

More work on the dockside started adding some texture to the dockside walls as they are smooth and I,am wanting a bit more depth to the face sides so again using the mini drill took a few different size sanding bits to it

I have also replaced some of the plastic step rails with wire and misshaped them so as not to have them all the same

MTB placed into base for fitting and some of the gaps and bits of the water were I got a bit to over exited with the mini drill filled in :banghead:

Once the filler is dried I can sand it out smooth before adding a coat of PVA glue to get the insulation foam hardened off

Thanks for that nothing I do is at all complicated or I would not be doing it, all basic modelling stuff that I have read about or been shown by others over the years it is just a case of not being scared to try out some new stuff now and then.

Next up will be adding some seaweed to the lower dock wall made from garden moss ?? :pirate:

Im going to use sphagnum moss sprayed up in a suitable shade of green/brown. Some of the railway stuff is close but I have it growing on the green where I live. If you want brown, what works well is the dead stuff out of the lawn, Especially if its been killed off by lawn feed. Good rake and you get tons of the stuff

Beefy are you doing high or low tide.

Hi Chuckd1 the way the boat sits to the dockside will look more like a low tide and I,am using the dried out moss I get from my back garden wall dry s to a brown colour but when in place will stain and paint using dark green oils Windsor and Newton paints and will be mixing in some model railway grass scatter and fine sawdust from the garage floor a tip I read about in a book I got last year called Let,s Build a Diorama there are 2 parts to this book series and I think there may now be a third out on buildings ??

It's about time you got this posted up matey. I knew you would get plenty of interest on here and maybe even pick up some more reference photgraphs - great stuff!

Scatter grass and moss added to low level of dock wall and with a coat of primer on the wall face you can see the mini drill work I have added to the brick face.
